Early reports: UFC 152 did 450.000 buys

Preliminary numbers from UFC 152 are 450,000 to 460,000 buys. Keep in mind these are still early numbers and can vary greatly. It's at the low end of expectations. I think the key here is that the six weeks between shows really didn't make a difference. It's considerably down from Jon Jones' last fight. Obviously Vitor Belfort wasn't going to draw as his opponent like Rashad Evans because you had no grudge match and betrayal storyline. But this looks to be less than Lyoto Machida. I really don't think all the publicity was going to keep people from buying, but one thing is pretty much for sure. All that publicity didn't either make him a bigger marquee star, nor did it create a situation where he sold more because people would buy to see him beat up. The only people buying to see him beat up were the same people buying to start with.
We'll have more commentary on what these numbers mean tomorrow but for comparison here are some recent UFC PPV numbers:
- UFC 150: Henderson vs. Edgar 2 - 190,000
- UFC 149: Faber vs. Barao - 235,000
- UFC 148: Silva vs Sonnen 2 - 1,000,000
- UFC 147: Franklin vs. Silva 2 - 140,000
- UFC 146: Dos Santos vs. Mir - 560,000
- UFC 145: Jones vs. Evans - 700,000
- UFC 144: Henderson vs. Edgar 1 - 375,000
- UFC 143: Diaz vs. Condit - 400,000
- UFC 142: Aldo vs. Mendes - 235,000
- UFC 141: Lesnar vs. Overeem - 750,000
- UFC 140: Jones vs. Machida - 485,000

Pretty low numbers considering it was a really solid card.
Lesnar vs Overeem only did 750k? Wow.

Smothering the too many cards argument imo. We had a massive break (it seemed that way) before it.
I'm sure Jones-Hendo could've done better.

This does three things in my opinion... proves there are just too many cards lately, REALLY proves how much more popular the larger weight classes are, and REALLY REALLY proves how well Chael Sonnen can sell a Pay Per View.
The UFC is first a business, and if they don't give Chael a shot at Jones after he beats Forrest, they're fools... it will be larger than UFC 100, I'm sure of it.

Silva/Sonnen II didn't even top UFC 100 and that had years of trash talk, the first fight and everything else going for it. The only thing that has a shot of topping that is Anderson/GSP or Jones/Silva.
Those numbers aren't bad, all things considered, Jones was fighting a middleweight and MMA fans have yet to embrace and probably won't embrace the lighter weights not to mention MMA is in a slight decline in the US so those numbers are alright with me.

Less PPV's with bigger buyrates=More PPV's with less buyrates imo. It's not a fact, rather an assumption.
A lot of people have said that they are putting on too much cards as of late. The fact that all the cards are stacked with talent completely justifies it. |

This lower ppv was alwasy going to be the case after JJ's stunt and the cancellation of 151. I think I even made a bet with someone on here that it would be the case. Don;t think he took it though!
People were saying it would further up the PPV's, that might happen if JJ was a controversial type of guy, but he just came off as being a lying dick from that whole thing, not a Lesnar type controversial guy, and so people aren't as interested to see him fight anymore. Less fans of your champ = less PPV buys

Ever heard of the idea of quality over quantity?
I don't think there are necessarily too many fight cards, but I love basketball too, for example, and an 82 game season is definitely overdoing it. I'd rather have something along the lines of a 66 game season and have fewer players with nagging injuries come playoff time.
As for the UFC, there are about 3 cards in that list that I really wouldn't have missed if they weren't put together. |
