Anderson Silva has no interest in fighting Jon Jones

He may be fighting Stephan Bonnar at 205 pounds at UFC 153, but UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva says he refuses to fight UFC Light Heavyweight champ Jon Jones. Listen to the UFC 153 media conference call and hear the details.

UFC Middleweight champ Anderson Silva is fighting Stephan Bonnar at 205lbs at UFC 153, but he took the time to remind fans and media (and UFC president Dana White) that he remains disinterested in facing Light Heavyweight champ Jon Jones.

"There's always been a lot of talks about me moving up to 205, I know Dana has talked about it a lot, all the fans have talked a lot about me moving up and facing Jon Jones, but it's something I've never wanted.

"I won't be pretentious to say that I want to move up, especially because there's other guys in that weight class on our team like Rafael Feijao (Cavalcante), (Antonio Rogerio) Minotoro Nogueira, there's other guys that could potentially face Jon Jones in the future.

"I'm 37-years old and I feel like I need to be honest and to continue what I've built which is keep defending my belt at 185," said Silva.
It sounds to me as if Anderson isn't necessarily worried about losing to Jon Jones, but rather, worried about clashing with his fellow black house buddies some where down the line. Black House is one of those camps that seem to be quite tight and personal, so I can kind of understand that. But, Anderson could be talking a load of bollocks like he has done in the past. There was an interview with Andy where he claimed he didn't look for the finish against Thales Leites because he said that he didn't want to hurt him because they were friends. Thales Leites responded to Andersons comments by saying they were never friends and didn't really like each other.

Yea. Andersons point of view changes with every fart. It's one of his most endearing features.

Call me childish but honestly, the only road I feel content with (...'content' my ass - it is my biggest wish as far as Silva's career is concerned) for what is left of Anderson's career is the superfight with JBJ (this would probably happen after he defeats GSP, with all due respect). He is already the GOAT in my book but it would really cement this 'title' for many others.

I respect fighters like Bisping and Weidman but I honestly don't see them faring much better than Sonnen or Okami (ok, Weidman would probably do better but when I look at athletes such as Couture or Hendo I think Anderson is still at a point in his career where he definitely has what it takes to put a proper beating on him).

Out of all the dream superfights I'd love to see (Aldo/Penn, JDS/Overeem, Cain/Overeem, etc.) this is by FAR the most interesting one, IMHO.

As much an Anderson Silva fan I am, one can't help but wonder if Silva isn't highly concerned with Jones as an opponent. He provides names of fighters who are at least a year away from solidfying themselves as contenders, as a reason he doesn't want to fight for the title. Furthermore no one's saying this fight has to be a title fight.

Three years ago I would've been interested in seeing this fight. Now I just think age is such a huge concern. Perhaps I'm being a skeptic, but I've never taken what's come out of Anderson's mouth too seriously -- even if he is perhaps my favorite fighter. One can't deny the querness of logic and personality he's exhibited.

Anderson, just make drop down and fight the dude (GSP) in the weight class beneath you. That's brave.

No offense intended; but I never understood this reaction that a lot of people seem to have. In order to fight GSP at welter weight, he'd have to drop down to the allowed weight limit. There are physical restrictions to how much weight someone can put on in a 24 hour period of time.

I do think GSP is more favorable a matchup against Silva and is perhaps why he's more willing to make the drop, but logically, I see no difference. GSP would have plenty of time to put on any extra weight he wanted to supplement for the slight size difference one day of weight difference may allow.

I just think that even if he is 37, AS still has what it takes to give Jones a beating (I think he is the only one to be honest, much more so than Gustaf or any other fighter at 185 or 205). Of course Jones is a force to be reckoned with and the fighters themselves (along with coaches) are probably the most accurate at 'evaluating' risks/possible outcomes of potential fights so I agree that Anderson would never take the prospect of fighting Jones 'lightly' but from the standpoint of his career and the position he is in (rare combination of incredible natural talent + technique), if he does end his career by a sequence of victories over GSP and JBJ, it would take him to a whole other level of 'legend' status imo. i sure hope it happens... i'm 32 and i admit to getting giddy as a schoolboy whenever I envision AS vs JBJ.

Hard to say how I feel about this. Silva has been calling out GSP since before JJ was anyone worth talking about. It seems a bit hypocritical for him to say, I will drop down and fight GSP, but I will not move up and fight JJ, it begs the question why? Is GSP and easier fight, is JJ a tougher fight, are there too many of his teammates in one weightclass etc.

At least Silva says he wont fight Jones, so we have an answer. GSP's gay ass on the other hand keeps saying he'll fight Silva but never does, I'm sure Silva would be all over that fight if GSP accepted it first.
