Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Geronimo Dos Santos Gets Called Off

officials did not announce whether a replacement fighter would be sought on such short notice.

Gonzaga could now potentially serve as a replacement opponent for Daniel Cormier at November's Strikeforce event, but Zuffa officials have yet to make an announcement for their intentions with "Napao."

UFC 153 takes place Oct. 13 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. The event's main card, including a light-heavyweight bout between UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva and fan-favorite 205-pounder Stephan Bonnar, airs live on pay-per-view while preliminary-card fights air on FX.

Dos Santos is perhaps best known to hardcore fans for a 2010 bout against Josh Barnett for the ill-fated Impact FC promotion. Barnett earned a first-round submission.

After that, things improved considerably for dos Santos, who once served as a sparring partner for Lyoto Machida. He went 16-2 on the Brazilian regional circuit with 10 wins by way of stoppage due to strikes. Overall, he's won 23 pro bouts using his fists, and the bulk of his fights have ended in the first round.

Notably, dos Santos has defeated UFC vets Antonio Mendes and Assuerio Silva. He once fought current UFC champ Junior Dos Santos and lost by TKO in the first round due to a cut. The UFC 153 fight would have marked his octagon debut.

Gonzaga, meanwhile, comes into the fight at the start of a career resurgence. After going 3-5 with the UFC from 2007-10, he returned to the octagon in January at UFC 142, where he earned a first-round submission against Ednaldo Oliveira.

Gonzaga, of course, is still best known for the high kick he floored Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic with at UFC 70. That led to a shot at the heavyweight title against then-champ Randy Couture, who stopped him with a TKO at UFC 74.

With the announcement, the full UFC 153 card now includes:

MAIN CARD (Pay-per-view)
Anderson Silva vs. Stephan Bonnar - light heavyweight fight
Fabio Maldonado vs. Glover Teixeira
Dave Herman vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
Jon Fitch vs. Erick Silva
Phil Davis vs. Wagner Prado
Demian Maia vs. Rick Story
Rony "Jason" Mariano Bezerra vs. Sam Sicilia
Gabriel Gonzaga vs. TBA
Gleison Tibau vs. Francisco Trinaldo
Diego Brandao vs. Joey Gambino
Renee Forte vs. Sergio Moraes
Chris Camozzi vs. Luiz Cane
Reza Madadi vs. Cristiano Marcello

I was looking forward to seeing Gonzaga again. Oh well.
