He did well in the WEC but he really went downhill once he got into the UFC. The fights getting a lot tougher probably didn't help either.

I don't know about that, you look at 11 of his last 12 fights and it's pretty crazy.
Alessio, Castillo, Grant, Guillard, Henderson, Johnson, Njokuani, Pettis, Tavares, Varner, Volkmann
going 5-6 against that field isn't to bad.

Yeah but no one really wants to be a fighter as a means to an end. Once he got that UFC contract he must have been thinking "Nice, once I get to the top I'll be taking Edgar's crown". Now it's pretty much confirmed that he'd never get to that stage and if he has other oppertunities ahead of him he might be best to end it on his own terms.
Would have been good to see the dude end on a win though.

If the Strikeforce rumor is true it likely wasn't his call. He's likely retiring to save face as the UFC didn't want to pick up his contract (23+23).

Not surprising, Volkmann absolutely ran through him.

I Agree that it probably wasn't his call.

Eh the problem is that he was winning and then he got into the UFC and started dropping fights left and right.

He was put in three contract eliminators in 2 years (Varner and Allesio were cut) this was the first one he lost. Regardless it's a shame we're losing someone that competitive and active when we need him to appraise Strikeforce talent.
