It's good, because it forces the competition to up their game. MMA is heading towards the JDS and Aldo kind of fighter where they try to keep the fight standing the whole time. It's like how BJJ was king, then wrestling, now JDS' style will become dominant. It just seems bad now because the select few brazilians (and JJ) are so far ahead of everyone else. Unless you have the Jones physical superiority you better learn to fight like Aldo.

I just think that right now, people should be more apprecitive of such an amazing generation for MMA. The talent now of non-champions surpasses the talent of former champions by far.

Junior Dos Santos has beat Velasquez, Carwin and Mir, and would beat Couture, Lesnar, Sylvia etc. quite easily.

Jon Jones is by a long shot the greatest LHW champion of all time, with defences over Rampage, Evans, Machida, Shogun and Vitor far surpassing Ortiz, Liddel and Shamrock's ranks.

Anderson Silva is the greatest fighter of all time.

GSP is far out in front with only Matt Hughes being close to him, and GSP's two wins over Hughes makes the deciding call.

Really, the domination is just a showcase of how great MMA is right now, and that even though we have great fighters like Machida, Evans, Sonnen, Velasquez, Gustaffson, Glover, Faber, Edgar, Nick and Nate, Fitch etc. on the roster, all good enough to be world champions in any other era, the head stones on top define how great an honour it is to become a UFC champion.

In terms of casual fans you might be right, and for general promotion of fights the closer MMA gets to boxing the worse in that aspect. But as a hardcore fan of each individual art i love seeing the best at work and i always wonder if the new contender can pull something off.

Hell Vitor got pretty close didn't he?

Definitely to the casuals. unless it's a villain then they usually watch in hope of seeing them lose.

You have a to have a couple dominant champs. Even though Aldo and Cruz have been champ a while I don't consider them dominant champs. Jones, GSP, Anderson are the only dominant champs. And Anderson may be close to the end.

Hasn't Aldo almost cleared his division? What makes a champion dominant or not?

He has had 3 defenses in the UFC. This division is young. The #2 ranked FW isn't even in the UFC. Frankie just dropped to 145.

Koch was supposed to fight and got hurt, young but undefeated. Lamas is there. Korean Zombie.

It will be over a year that he will have sat out. He has been dominant, but he hasn't cleared the division and held his title for years like GSP or Anderson. And Jones has just made beating the top 5 LHWs look too easy. That is why I list him as "dominant".

Aldo is great, but he hasn't looked like Jones and doesn't have the defenses GSP or Anderson does.

He hasn't in the UFC, but in the WEC he was running through guys left and right, that savage beating he laid on Faber was absolutely brutal. People were all over Aldo back in 2010 but for some reason he's been less than stellar in the UFC, maybe it's because he's hurt often but yeah, WEC Aldo was a killer.

I don't want to sound like I'm bashing Aldo. But lets look at his opponets

Mike Brown? yea where is he?

Faber? Highly overrated for beating up on WEC fighters for years. Many of his defenses were against guys who didn't make it or didn't belong in the UFC. Good win still, but Faber dropped to 135 and may not even be top 3 in that thin division. Faber never evolved.

Manny? How has he looked recently? Like a legit guy who fought for a title?

Hominick was a good win, but again where is he now? Why did he just fall off?

Mendes was a good win. He is still a top FW and has some of the best wrestling in the division.

Florian, again good win. But at 35 and rail thin Kenny wasn't the same Kenny as the lighweight version a few years earlier. He retired after that fight.

The division is corky. You got ok 155ers dropping (besides Edgar). Guys like Faber who really belonged at 135. Or guys like Mike Brown and Manny who really were never elite fighters with elite skills. The division is just becoming established a bit with an elite guy like Frankie dropping.

Depends on the Champion.

Chuck, Wand, Anderson, Fedor, BJ, GSP, Hughes are all good examples of well-loved dominant champions. And I feel they represent a pretty good cross-section of different personalities and attitudes. Even though some of them were kind of dicks a lot of the time (Hughes, Wand, Anderson) they accepted their role as the bad guy and often won people over because of that.

The problem for Jones is that he can't decide if he wants to be a respectful, kids' role-model type champion or a shit-talking disrespectful bad ass champion.

So he alienates the fans who like the nice guys but also the fans that like a little bit of an edge to their fighters.

And it's not just outside the cage. In the cage, he'll poke the eyes, come crawling out of the corner at the beginning of the fight, throw blatantly illegal elbows on the ground, etc... but then he tries to bow to his opponents and show humility two seconds later.

The problem is he's just so fake all the time, I wonder if he even knows who the real Jon Jones is anymore.
