Wanderlei Silva looks to move back to light-heavyweight

Looks like Silva is done competing at 185. He actually has a pretty impressive record at middleweight with only one defeat and wins over Bisping and Le.

Seems he wants to keep competing at LHW. I cannot think of a single lhw that I want Silva to face...

Here's the article.
Quote:
Former Pride FC middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva plans on coming back into the Octagon in 2013, and may be returning to the light-heavyweight division after just three bouts at middleweight in the UFC.

Silva (34-12-1), went 2-1 as a middleweight with big wins over Michael Bisping and Cung Le. His lone defeat at the weight came at UFC 132 where he was knocked out by Chris Leben just 27-seconds into the bout.

In his last bout was fought at a 190-pound catchweight against Rich Franklin at UFC 147 this past June. The two had previously fought at UFC 99 where Silva loss via unanimous decision.

Early on in the fight, Silva dropped Franklin with powerful punches, but was unsuccessful in putting the former champion away. An exhausted Silva was picked apart for the remaining five rounds of the fight and was dropped himself in the final seconds of the bout. Franklin would go on to beat Silva again via unanimous decision.

Though he's 1-4 in the UFC's light-heavyweight division, Silva's eyeing a return to the division moving forward.

"I want to either fight a catchweight bout at 198 pounds (93 kg) or at light heavyweight," Wanderlei Silva told Sherdog.com. "At middleweight, I’m very hungry (laughs). Right now, I'm doing weight training and some shadow boxing. I'm kind of on vacation now, paying attention to the family, but next year the Wand is back."

Silva's had an interesting relationship with another UFC fighter who also floats at times between middleweight and light-heavyweight - his countryman, former training partner, onetime personal nemesis and current UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

"I think every sport has a guy who is different," Silva said. "Soccer had Pele, Formula 1 had Ayrton Senna, and MMA has Anderson. He is different, but it did not start now. He trained at a gym in a small neighborhood in Curitiba and was very dedicated. You don't make an Anderson Silva in one day. The lesson he leaves is the self-dedication.

"He who trains like Anderson Silva has many chances to be like him. Do not let success or the money that comes with winning change your mind. He has been a UFC champion for so long, and he still trains hard. The risk there was that he might be hit on the chin and knocked out, but Anderson is a man secure in what he does; he's on another level. He serves as an example for many people, for young fighters like Jon Jones."

Good. Bigger fights for him.

Hate when guys like him and Belfort drain themselves to fight at that weight. That is not who those guys ever were. They were muscular thick 205ers. Too much on the body to make that cut at that age. Especially for guys who never used to cut weight much.

Thinking ahead..

Wandy/Belfort at a catch or 205? Fight didn't happen after TUF

Bader?

Te-Huna?

Maybe they do Sonnen/Wandy at some point at 205.

Wandy just needs to retire before he does too much more serious damage to himself. Fighting larger more powerful fighters isn't a good idea right now.

Yeah.....

This is like, the worst possible thing for him.

Jones, Hendo, Rashad, Machida, Gus, Bader, Rampage, and even the mid-tier LHW's like Vera, Silva, Te-Huna, and others would end him. I guess Middleweight also has it's fair share of heavy hitters, in Anderson, Vitor, Munoz, Stann, and the hellbow Weidman hit on Munoz could have probably KO'ed him too.

Wanderlei needs to retire, but, sadly it looks like he's gonna be one of those guys that hangs on for too long and brain damage looks like it's imminent which is a shame since Wanderlei is one of the best guys in MMA.

Does anyone know what the person who writes the article is getting at when they call Anderson (Wanderlei's) "onetime personal nemesis"? I've never heard of any bad blood, curious.

I think it's because Anderson left Chute Boxe a long time ago over something(don't know what) and was ready to quit MMA until Nog told him to stay and brought him into his team at the time, which would explain why they're so close.

I could be wrong though, an actual fan of Anderson's needs to confirm that but that's why I think they had some beef at one point.

I believe it was when Wanderlei moved down to MW. Same reason why Anderson doesn't want to fight for the belt at LHW since his team mates; Feijao, Machida, Lil Nog, Maldonado. To him it's all about respect.

As for Chute Box, Wandy was the star followed by Shogun. Anderson was in the shadows and even before them Pele.

They exchanged a few words and eventually squashed it really for Wandy's benefit. It was Anderson who mimicked Cung Le and helped em train for that fight and Cordero's strategy to let Cung chase after em. That was a plan nobody would have imagined. It worked because it kept a very far distance screwing up Cung's timing. He's most potent in the mid range.

Anyways Wandy never looked the same at MW. Huge difference between Pride or old school Wandy vs the 185 Wandy. His cardio and conditioning seemed to suffer too just like Dan Henderson.

I think Wandy wants Hendo and Rampage again. In fact...holy shiet. I think this could be both (Wand vs Rampage) of their retirement fights.
