Thiago Alves taking year off, out until June 2013

"Following my chest surgery, my management and myself have decided to take this year off to fix my left knee as well as all my other little injuries to come back stronger than ever in 2013 to make another run for the title and get it this time. I should be back by June 2013."
Alves (19-9) hasn't fared too well since a decision loss to UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 100, going just 2-3 since then. His last bout was a late loss to Martin Kampmann at UFC on FX 2 in March, in a bout he was controlling until an ill-advised takedown attempt in the third round got him stuck in a guillotine. He's long been known as one of the better strikers in the division.

Glad he's getting healthy but ******* a, dude's my second favorite fighter after Machida and he already lost one year due to that brain surgery. He was so close to beating Kampmann. :/

I believe a bit in luck...and he could use some. This is why fighting is so complex. One move not only alters a fight outcome, but an entire career trajectory. A butterfly effect if you will.
Hope he heals up and starts wrecking people in the division again.

Shame, but it is the right decision. Really hope he comes back better than ever, which at his age he can.

Has this ever worked for someone. I've only ever seen a guy be cut win some fights and really feel the hunger again out of the ufc then come back stronger. No one I can remember has voluntarily taken a year off and come back better.

This was my first thought but maybe some fighters are starting to think differently. Alves should have beat Kampmann and though he lost fair and square, the frustration may have been what tipped him over the egde.
I've got nagging injuries, I should have won that fight, I'm still under 30... screw it I'll take a year out see how I feel. Don't forget, these guys earn more than we're led to believe.
