Dana: No place for Cyborg if she can't make 135.

Quote:
No place for Cris Cyborg in UFC if she can't make 135 pounds, Dana White says

MONTREAL -- With Cris Cyborg's steroid suspension set to expire in December, and the UFC set to bring women's MMA into its octagon shortly thereafter, these should be happy days for Cyborg. But instead, she's faced with a major decision about her career based upon Dana's White empathic proclamation on her place in the UFC.

The thing is, she might not have one.

White made it clear on Saturday night that he is only bringing in one weight division to the UFC: the 135-pound division. And with Cyborg's continued insistence that she cannot cut below 145, well, that could leave her with no place to go.

White confirmed that there would be no place in the UFC for Cyborg unless she hits 135.

"Right," he said when asked if that was indeed the case. "I'm bringing in the 135-pound division. That's what I'm doing."

Ronda Rousey has already been named the division's champion, with her Strikeforce belt being traded in for a shiny new UFC belt. Cyborg was the Strikeforce 145-pound champ but was stripped of the gold after testing positive for stanozolol following her Dec. 17, 2011 match with Hiroko Yamanaka.

That division holds little interest for White and his matchmakers, who see most of the women's talent at 135 and below. And because of it, he warned Cyborg that she'd have to come down to Rousey's weight class or be out of a job.

"I haven’t [talked to her] but our matchmakers have talked to her camp and she doesn’t seem too excited to fight Ronda," he said. "We’re bringing in the 135-pound division, that’s what we’re doing. I’m trying this women’s thing out. Ronda’s the champ. I think that Ronda has the potential to be a big star. She’s already getting media we’ve never even gotten before and she’s never even set foot in the UFC. That’s the division we’re bringing in, the 135-pound division, so I don’t know. We’ll see."

The only legit threat to Ronda IMO. Do a catchweight bout maybe?

This is the only women's fight right now which will draw a big enough crowd for UFC numbers. Obviously not a PPV headline as I said in the other topic. Even this will probably draw low numbers for a free fight.

This is the only fight for Rhona right now IMO. This is Dana's way of making Cyborg drop the weight. He knows it's the only intriguing matchup for her. He wants this fight. He just doesn't want Cyborg to think she's calling the shots.

RIP Jordan Corder. Watch over me from above brother.

I don't understand why they don't just get the best of both worlds and combine the weights and make it Women's 140.

In time ppl will realize this move wasnt so much about zuffa believing in female mma as it was about capitalizing on rousey's fleeting popularity. The interview with ariel spoke volumes, this in uncharted territory and zuffa and they are just playing it by ear Dana all but said this venture is just going to last a year if even

Agree'd, especially seeing that they have already made Ronda Champion without having her actually win an official belt. (although, they did the same with Aldo)

Even without steriods, I just don't see Cyborg making 135. Even if she does, she would be drained and emaciated, and it would most likely be unfair going up against Ronda. I hope Dana takes a less aggressive approach in the future and agree's to have this at 140 lbs.

No way they do a catchweight fight. UFC have set that purely to force Cyborg down to 135 as they know Rhonda wont take the fight at any higher weight.

Although Ronda is a big name that generates a lot of publicity, in order for the UFC to make the most money in this situation, they are going to have to involve Ronda in a big fight. The only big fight (that people care about) for Ronda at this point and time is Cyborg, and if Cyborg can't make a safe cut to 135, then I would think the UFC is willing to risk the set standerds and make a 140 lbs catchweight in order to make this fight happen. That can't be too much to ask.

So what's the UFC going to do if Cyborg says she won't be bullied to jeopardize her health for the contract? Interested on seeing how all this works out.
