Long Island's Chris Weidman, one of the top UFC middleweight fighters, is out of UFC 155 next month with an undisclosed injury, Newsday has learned.
He was scheduled to fight Tim Boetsch on Dec. 29 in Las Vegas.
"It's awful," trainer Ray Longo said.
Instead, Boetsch will fight Costa Philippou, a teammate of Weidman's with Longo and Matt Serra. Philippou was supposed to fight this past Saturday against Nick Ring at UFC 154 in Montreal, but the bout was canceled that morning when Ring fell ill.
"Everything happens for a reason," Longo said. "I guess this is the reason."
Weidman (9-0, 5-0 UFC) had emerged as a top contender for Anderson Silva's title with wins over Demian Maia and Mark Munoz.
Philippou (10-2, 4-1) has quietly won four straight in the UFC with his precision striking and improving takedown defense.
I do feel for Boetsch though. If he beat Weidman he would of got a title shot or a go at the Bisping/Belfort winner. Now what? Imagine theres an upset and Boetsch loses? He'll end up going from one fight away from title shot to like 3 or 4!
Everything always balances out. Did NOT like that match up anyways. It should be Weidman vs Belcher. Bisping vs Okami cuz he's gonna have a helluve match up against Vitor. Vitor just fought so he can take a break or wait for the winner of Weidman and Belcher or Bisping vs Okami.
But it looks like the bouts are set.
Bisping vs Vitor
Belcher vs Okami
Toquino vs Lombard (interesting match up although I would have liked to see Lombard vs Vitor)
I think these constant injuries are something that all us fans are gonna have to come to expect in MMA, this years been brutal. Philippou vs Boetsch should be a good fight, big chance for philippou to sky rocket himself into the top ten.
I actually like this fight more. Still, the injuries are getting tiresome. As was said, I imagine they're something we'll have to learn to live with. I don't see the situation getting any better.
I like this match up a helluva lot more to be honest. Tim will have to use a similar strategy to the one he used against Lombard. He can't go out and brawl like he's done in the past. He was getting worked standing by Nick Ring so I can only imagine what Phillipou will do to him.
Philippou will smash Boestch. Then..., Phili will be 2 or 3 fights from a top 5 contender spot. I don't care what numerous turds have to say, Boestch is not a top guy, never will be. This fight is nothing more than a stepping stone fight for Philippou.
Great chance for Costa, Dana likes Tim atm and beating him = contender talk. And beat him, I think Costa will.
Tim's good fortune probably ends here, Okami was tooling him and Lombard was supposedly injured... He fought uncharacteristically anyway and Tim only just got the W.
Im sure i read on twitter that Weidman is supposedly out for 6 month?
