Georges St-Pierre: Anderson Silva fight will happen when the time is right for me

The Georges St-Pierre vs. Anderson Silva super fight isn't a done deal just yet, and if GSP gets his way, may not happen for a while.

In his first major interview since his UFC 154 win over Carlos Condit last weekend, St-Pierre told Radio-Canada's "Tout Le Monde en Parle" ("Everyone is Talking") on Sunday night that the time just isn't right for him fight Silva.

Below are his translated comments about the fight:

"This fight is the cherry on the sundae," he said. "He wants to fight me so he can then retire. I would like to fight him too, but after I fight him and win the fight, what happens next? These days, yeah, there's a lot of money to be made, but I don't fight for the money. My motivation is to be the best. Like we said, to be the Wayne Gretzky of my sport. So if I fight him, what happens next? It will be over. So yes, I want the fight, but I want to take it when I decide the time is right, not when he wants the fight to happen.

"On top of that, he weighs 234 pounds; I weigh 188. So there's a big weight difference. I've fought guys who were bigger -- I'm not scared of him -- it's just that I will take this fight when it makes sense for me. I just came back from an injury, there's money to be made, there are fights in my weight class, other challenges out there, and if I fight him, I will have to gain weight, while he will have to lose weight, and then afterwards, I won't be able to come back to my weight class.

"First and foremost, I have things to do at 170 pounds. When I am ready and when I want the fight, that's when it will happen."

Other notes from the show:

* GSP wore sunglasses throughout the entire interview because he said he had yet to fully heal from the Condit fight.

* GSP said he had Christmas dinner last year at Sylvester Stallone's house after his doctor wouldn't clear him to fly home from Los Angeles following knee surgery.

* Arnold Schwarzenegger called to congratulate him after last weekend's win.

* He said he's not quite the Gretzky of MMA but maybe the Joe Sakic.

Interesting that he said Silva weighs 234 pounds and he weigh 188...:confused03: Exaggerate much?

Prob. not in GSP, the prob. is in Silva. Why the hell do you want to fight this "Lay & Pray" fighter?

Silva gave GSP more than he deserves. He doesn't deserve all that interest. And I really wish DW make a rematch for Condit!

JBJ is far a better super fight than this!

Man why doesnt he just say he doesnt want the fight?? He was 193 at the time of the shields fight and from what ive heard he has only focused more on strength and conditioning...i really doubt he has lost that much muscle since he looks just as big if not bigger

Seems to me hes making himself look smaller and making anderson look huge, anderson 234? Yeah maybe on his time off when all he does is eat burguer king...anderson in shape is 200, thats his ideal weight, he would never consider almost getting to 170 if he weighed 234

Why keep lying like this? Seems so childish...i dont think hes a coward if he doesnt want the fight, hes from a lower weight class he has all the right to turn him down...and he does have great fights waiting for him at WW while anderson could maybe do a superfight with JBJ and rashad...or just keep defending his belt

GSP once again "delaying" the possibility of this fight happening rather than just admitting that he's not interested in fighting Silva at all. Saw this coming months before the Condit fight. GSP is a very intellegent person. I'm pretty sure he understands that Anderson is 37 years old, and might possibly be at the end of the road at this point in time. For this fight to be as big as possible, it must be sooner rather than later and the fact the GSP still doesn't want this fight tells me that this will never happen.

Welp, atleast now we can kill talks of a superfight and start talking about something that is within the realm of possibility, which is GSP vs Johny Hendricks. People need to start seeing the reality the none of these "Superfights" are ever going to happen. JBJ vs AS will never happen. AS vs GSP will never happen.

Interested in hearing Danas responce to this situation...

Why can't he fight at 185 if he walks around at 188? I dont get it really. I mean how much weight can Silva put back in one day if he cuts to 185?

Is the weight thing that much of an issue for a this fight? Silva is not know for his strength

I think this is more of a legacy thing for GSP then a weight thing. He's afraid of losing such a big fight and where it will leave him.

234 is Silva's walk around weight, when he is OUT OF SHAPE. Rampage walks around at 250, but that doesn't mean he is some freakin' huge heavyweight.

I'm sure Silva stated sometime back that he starts cutting down from 205 pounds for his fights at 185. Furthermore, he weighed in at 202 pounds for the fight against Bonnar. I'm sure GSP is just trying to exaggerate the weight difference between him and Silva just to convince the fans that he is getting the short end of the stick if he takes the fight against Silva.

Also, GSP's trainers said he fought against Shields at 192-194 pounds.

Not that I want to see the Silva-GSP fight anymore though. I just found it funny that GSP is trying to make it look like there is such a HUGE weight difference between them two. If he doesn't want the fight, just say it. No need to come up with so many ridiculous remarks and excuses.

If they are so different in weight, GSP's camp wouldn't even have suggested Silva drop down to 170 then?

Pretty sure Silva said he might go down to 170 for the fight.

Once again, I reiterate that I have no interest in seeing this fight. I admit, Silva is the bigger man. However, the size difference is definitely not as big as everyone think it is. If the fight happened at catchweight of 178, I'm pretty sure Silva would only be about 8~10 pounds heavier than GSP on fight night.

Silva at 205, UFC 101:

GSP is a great fighter, but such a little girl about certain things. He exaggerates so much as well, he used to say he was 190-193 now he is 188.

His camp just said the fight would have to be at 170. Now he says he would have to put on weight???

It is such a big deal that he would put on weight. But not a big deal that old man ANderson would have to cut much further down than he usually does.

Everything is "poor GSP".

Gets old.

I have to admit I'm disappointed. All this talk of 'stuff left to do in my division' is just not true. I realize he has always been uber polite, so he doesn't want to say anything like 'There is no one worth fighting in my div', but cut the crap.

If you are ever fighting Silva, now is the time, there is nothing to wait for. There are no challengers that bring anything new. If GSP wants to stay at 170, because thats his natural weight class, fine, just say so, enough hemming and hawing.

I'm not either. It's clear as day GSP doesn't want this fight, not now not ever. Sorry to piss on everybodys parade. But this isn't happening, GSP doesn't want the fight. I wish he would man up and just decline the fight. Dana would throw a hissy fit, some fans might as well, but it will pass. The world won't end if this fight doesn't happen.

Lmao at people's opinions.

"Anderson shouldnt be fighting smaller people, he should move up and fight Jon Jones. Meanwhile, GSP should stay at exactly the same weight and not fight anyone outside of WW".

"If Anderson wants the fight, he should move down and fight him".

So Anderson is too big to fight GSP, but people want him to cut down to WW? Yeah, I agree. While we're at it, why the hell doesnt JDS cut and fight Jose Aldo? That Brazillians dont fight Brazillians shit is a joke.
