Maybe you should actually read the article before you respond then. He clearly says "of all time", he did not say greatest right now.

I did read it and I misinterpreted/misunderstood the quote, so I apologise.
Regardless of what's happened to Penn during his recent downward spiral, he'll still always be one of the greatest of all time.

+1 to loving BJ Penn
Why do I love him? It's simple. If the UFC called BJ today and asked him if he wanted to fight Anderson Silva, he would say yes in an instant.
The man is of a dying breed and should be celebrated.

I find it funny that he actually brings this up. Under performing because of fitness level is nothing but his fault, and I guess maybe thats why he's probably in the best shape he's been in a long time. He wants to make a name for himself again, because people are forgetting what Penn has done in the past because of the way he has lost recently.
Its insane that Penn has always been this good without putting in the effort other champions have. The talk about Penn always seems to be, what could have been...what could have been if he would be in 5 round shape every fight. And unless Penn comes out the next couple years and shows the world he's still boss. I have a feeling that will linger with his name when he retires.

You only mention the fights in the tail end of his career, you could easily mention a lot of great fights he has won. Pretty ignorant post. not to mention how quickly he was to get his BB compared to the rest of the world

His name doesn't deserve to be in P4P discussions anymore. I get that this forum loves Penn but he's simply lost too many fights to be relevant in any P4P discussions.

Anderson Silva never moved up and beat the best LWH in the world, GSP hasn't moved up and beat the best MW in the world. BJ did that shit.
He is considered the LW GOAT, has fought the two greatest WW's of all time and has a combined record of 2-3 against them and many would argue he should be 3-2 against them. That is epic, when GSP does better than 2-3 against Anderson Silva and Dan Henderson or Anderson Silva goes 2-3 or better against Chuck Liddell and Jon Jones than we can clear BJ from the list but that hasn't happened.

BJ half assed his own career. His gassing is hardly a 'recent' trend, and so he has nobody to blame but himself. No one can take away certain of his performances. But 'greatest of all time' is reserved for those fighters who actually took their careers seriously. And by all accounts, BJ hasn't. He's squandered his gifts for the better part of his career and I'm meant to consider him alongside greats like Anderson, St. Pierre, and the like? Men who wouldn't insult their opponents by showing up out of shape? Sorry, but it doesn't work that way.

As much as I am PUMPED for the Rory / BJ fight, I really want BJ to make another run at the LW title.
DAMN IT I WANT BJ BACK AT 155!
With his new dedication, and with Frankie not being the champ anymore, and with all these new potential contenders I think BJ can dominate again...
