Womens MMA in the UFC

A great mistake for Zuffa.

Saturation is mentioned plenty, and in this instance it applies to weight divisions. Why incorporate another new weight division when you've yet to establish 2 and arguably 3 new weight divisions. It's easy for us to identify the champs and contenders of the heavyweight to lightweight divisions, but the rest we need to sherdog that shit.

Speaking of depth, WMMA is as shallow as a kiddie pool. Rousey and Cyborg is the fight everyone wants to see, that can happen a couple of times and then what? Two years later and you're trying to sustain WMMA with less than a handful of women.

And now I will be proclaimed as a misogynist, but, I want to see the best fight. Men and women are equal in many ways, however, when it comes to physical prowess, men were given an advantage. So, pertaining to sporting activities, I prefer to watch the best of the best.

It probably will end up being a mistake not because of the talent but because most MMA fans aren't interested in watching anything under 155 lbs, I guess it makes them uncomfortable to know that a 125 lb man or a woman like Ronda could beat their ass in so many different ways it's hilarious.

I'm a big supporter of women's MMA and have said many times here that the warrior spirit is not gender specific. That being said I'm reluctant to watch women's MMA in the UFC.

As a traditional martial artist of 20+ years in multiple disciplines I love the technical aspects of MMA. However I can get those technical aspects from watching competition from my favorite arts. MMA is as near to a 'real world' scenario as martial arts can enjoy. It keeps the elite strikers in check with good grappling and keeps elite grapplers in check by the ever present risk of a KO. It changes all disciplines to account for different disciplines (strikes stand different, going for that knee bar means you are likely going to get your head pounded, etc).

Basically I do want my MMA violent. I'm not a blood monger and I don't enjoy seeing snapped limbs (I hurt for Big Nog when his arm snapped as I don't think he had time to tap even if wanted to). MMA is a reality check for all martial arts disciplines and it is an opportunity to compete with all your tools at your disposal with the intent to deliver technique in the manner in which it was designed to do.

I'm a fan of women's MMA and of all weight divisions of MMA; Just not as much as I am 155+ or higher in the male division. I choose where I spend my money and if given the choice I will support my interests by voting with my money, by buying or not buying PPVs per my level of interest in a card.

I will watch the other divisions (for free on Fox/Facebook/etc) but I would rather watch male welterweights and higher on a PPV event. PPVs should be a 'bowl game' and I don't get real fired up about the standings of a junior college even if I enjoy watching an exciting game now and again.

Additionally the further they saturate the events with gender classes, weight classes, etc the less likely people are going to be able to relate and follow a fighter. The NFL wouldn't be much if not for die-hard fans and it is difficult to follow fighters who only compete a couple times of year. At that point you have to love the sport a lot to follow it and that is where I think the UFC loses when compared to other mainstream sports.

WMMA is great! We all need a toilet / snack and beer run fight in a event and WMMA fights will present a perfect opportunity for that.

The only problem I have with the UFC adding women's MMA at this point in time is that they are placing everything squarely on Ronda's back. This is the same thing Strikeforce with Gina Carano. What happens when she loses or gets dominated? All that money and promotional work goes out the window.

I still think Woman's MMA is too shallow (talent wise) to make into a legitimate professional division. There are only 4 or 5 exceptionally talented chicks out there are Ronda's already beaten most of them.

What did the OP say that was remotely hipster?

There isn't going to be more UFC fights if they get serious about a women's division. The amount of money spent on the payroll will be the same, so they will effectively be replacing roster spots that would be used on fighters that the majority of the fans would rather see with a bunch of terrible women fighters that are all there to get armbarred by Ronda Rousey so the UFC can make a quick buck on a sideshow.

Jerk........

I'm willing to bet that nothing changes and the landscape of the UFC remains relatively the same. It's a single division with a handful of fighters, much like flyweight. I predict we'll get maybe half a dozen female fights each year, people will eat them up because they are generally exciting, and that will be that. I get that we have to get out our crystal balls, analyze all of the UFC's decisions with a fine toothed comb, and act as though we could run the company better, but the truth is, any talk of 'bad business decisions' is (a) speculative, and (b) jumping the gun.

always found womens MMA more entertaining and exciting to watch than mens MMA, it's not necessarily a mistake on Zuffas part as the talent is out there...but I thought Mens BW and FlW should have been established before getting WMMA involved.

With Strikeforce dissolving I guess they felt they'd have to take WMMA on now, or let the talent go free and get tied up in contracts with Bellator, Invicta etc etc.

Guess best strike while the iron is hot.

135 is established for the men's Women's MMA should be fine for the first year with fights against Cyborg and McMann probable for 2013, after that we'll see who emerges as contenders but I'm stoked for the Cyborg and McMann fights, Ronda will have to work to win those.
