Demetrious Johnson, Dominic Cruz, Benson Henderson, GSP and Jon Jones are all wrestlers and dominant champions. Is it safe to say that wrestling is the # 1 fighting style on which to build a base as a true champion?
What makes GSP such a good wrestler in MMA prehaps wouldn't work in a pure wrestling match. It's his ability to threaten with punches and then switch levels and take people down, his explosiveness surely helps too.
And that is also a John Jones asset. Guy can hit you anyway he pleases from any angle using any body part and when he decides it's time to you to lay on the mat, you will lay on the mat. That's MMA wrestling at its finnest application and it doesn't matter he lackes the pure wrestling credentials of many other fighters.
People have been saying that for ten years. And it's true. It's the best BASE. But it is in no way sufficient, in and of itself. Go in there with nothing but wrestling and the BJJ guys eat you for breakfast. You have to be at least about to defend striking, grappling and submissions.
Personally, I think it's just the full body nature of the training in wrestling.
It's take a lot longer to build a house when you design the basement to withstand a 10.5 Rictor earthquake.
It's a never ending cycle between strikers and wrestlers.
