Dana White: The UFC Didn’t Pass Over Johny Hendricks, GSP Asked for Diaz

It’s been a mixed bag of reactions over the last few days regarding the announcement that Georges St-Pierre would fight Nick Diaz next at UFC 158 instead of Johny Hendricks.

On paper, Hendricks is far and away the No. 1 contender at 170 pounds with three wins over top ten opposition in the last 12 months, including knockouts of both Jon Fitch and Martin Kampmann.

But Georges St-Pierre wanted to face Nick Diaz to settle more than a year of hype leading into their potential fight, and so what do you give the man who never asks for anything when he finally asks for something?

If you’re the UFC, you give him what he wants.

“The guy’s never asked us for anything. He’s an awesome champion, he does anything we ask of him, and he asked us for a favor. He wants to fight Diaz. It’s not like people don’t want to see it,” UFC president Dana White said about St-Pierre’s request.

White is careful to point out that they didn’t pass over Johny Hendricks for the top spot in the title race. They only chose to give St-Pierre the fight he was asking for, against Nick Diaz.

“The UFC didn’t do that, the champ did. The champ called him out and wanted to fight him. So the UFC didn’t do it, the guy who held the belt did,” said White.

“That’s who he asked us to fight, and like I just said, when somebody goes on a run as long as Georges St-Pierre has, done what he’s does for the sport, for that division and everything else, they ask for a fight that they want, then they’ll get it too.”

St-Pierre faces Diaz in the main event for UFC 158 while Hendricks will also compete on the card against Jake Ellenberger in an additional welterweight showdown.

Should he win, White says it’s a no-brainer that Hendricks would be next in line for a crack at Georges St-Pierre.

“Hendricks is definitely a contender right now, and yes, he’d be next in line,” White answered.

There is no doubt St-Pierrre vs. Diaz will be a top pay-per-view for all of 2013, and it looks like at least for this occasion, what the champ wants, the champ gets.

I try not to bash Dana too hard since I respect a lot of the things he's done and is still doing, but give me a faking break! I just watched this video and couldn't help but gasp at the BS coming out of his mouth.

I would much rather him say we are running a buisness, and we screwed Hendricks, but the Diaz fight is the big money fight, instead of this ^^^! :bored01:

In B4 GSP is scared...

GSP was right in his interview the other day. The Diaz fight is bigger and will sell more.

Eh, the two go hand-in-hand. GSP/Diaz a bigger fight, GSP/Hendricks more deserving. I'd rather Hendricks, but it is what it is. It's not like it's really a sport when determining contenders anyway.

I love how he blasts boxing for putting on money fights when he's making Jones/Sonnen and GSP/Diaz.

Guy's a massive hypocrite.

Shenanigans. I get that GSP has clout as a dominant champion, but its a total cop out by Dana White to act like he can't do anything about actually booking matches fairly.

Whatever, I don't really care who GSP faces, he'll probably fight both of them anyways, but Dana is being a total bitch.

Why the hell is everybody saying Dana sold out for money? Please explain to me how Diaz is a big money fight? The average fan on the street doesn't know or care about Diaz any more than they do about Hendricks. It's hard to hype a fight with a guy coming off a loss and long suspension, but it's incredibly easy to hype a muscular guy with KO power coming off a massively impressive win streak with highlight reel finishes.

Calling this a "big money cop out" is simply a knee-jerk reaction with absolutely no basis in reason. If ANYTHING, you could make the case that Dana is afraid of GSP losing to Hendricks and in that sense he is protecting his cash cow, but Diaz-GSP is not a more money-making fight than Hendricks-GSP.

Read any thread regarding GSP/Diaz.

People widely agree it will be a bigger fight than Hendricks because Diaz will talk more trash and get under GSP's skin. Also, why did he book Jones/Sonnen? Because it has the potential to sell more than Jones/Henderson.

Diaz was a strikeforce champ with a hell of a win streak and very rarely has a boring fight. More people know who Diaz is than Hendricks. Not to mention, this could be sold as good guy vs bad guy. It will bring in lots more money. You are wrong.

Makes sense. GSP can probably hold Diaz down for 25 minutes. But he can't take even one punch from Hendricks.

Just shows how dangerous Hendricks is that Diaz is the safe choice.

SideWays222 12-18-2012 12:31 AM

I dont really care about this. Hendricks could probably play the waiting game and get the title shot or he could win 1 more fight and get the title shot. Either way i see GSP fighting both Diaz and Hendricks before 2013 is up.
