Sensei Steven Seagal recently criticized UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre during an episode of "The MMA Hour." During the interview, Seagal questioned St. Pierre's previous Octagon performances, and stated that the champion was not a true mixed martial artist.
St. Pierre responds by pointing to his come-from-behind victories over B.J. Penn and Carlos Condit as proof that he is a true martial artist.
St. Pierre is currently scheduled to defend his belt against former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz at UFC 158 on March 16 inside the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Being a martial artist does not mean you get tagged in every fight. Being a martial artist means studying and participating in one or more martial arts, which GSP has done very succesfully.
He's elite in several martial arts, including karate (forget which kind), BJJ (black belt), wrestling, boxing and so on. Even if you don't count stuff such as wrestling and boxing as martial arts, he's still very skilled at several, more traditional martial arts.

This is one of the few times where I have to disagree. He has a Kyukushin karate background, trains in Muay Thai and BJJ. In terms of his "spirit" he has it otherwise he would not be champion for this long. Not sure what Seagal's angle was here.
On other news Stephanie Seymour is still one hot babe.

Why do people always say that?
I think somebody who has 4 title defense in 1 year deserves more prize than somebody who has 3 title defense in 4 years.
Not so hard to be unbeaten "for so long" if you only fight once a year.

Guessin' you don't really like GSP. I'm a long time Seagal advocate, but lets look at the figures.
Fought twice in the UFC and challenged for the belt and did well. Nerves got the better of him. Subsequently went on a five fight winning streak beating Hughes for his sixth consecutive win. Lost it against Serra then went on a ten fight win streak beating the top five and ten fighters in the entire division beating both fighters convincingly who he lost to earlier.
Granted he fought more frequently when he was younger, but he's getting older and is becoming more injury prone. He usually fights five rounds so there's a higher inclination for him to be injured. He won 40 out of 41 rounds in a span of five years. You gotta look at it this way. Have you ever competed in any sports. If you did then you know how mentally tough and skilled you have to be to maintain the competitive edge. Don't buy into other people talking about how he plays it safe. He maims his opponents. Condit was the only fight recently where he got battered. Nobody would be talking down on him if he finished. He said it best in an interview; "I don't have the power of Rampage Jackson, the accuracy of Anderson Silva, or the athleticism of Roy Jones Jr."
Dude has to rely on his entire tool box to win albeit in a more risk adverse fashion. He's highly skilled, has a much stronger mental acuity now, excellent fight IQ, and above all else a humble martial artist. I have friends who know em personally. I've heard he's like an average joe you'd meet on the streets. I guarantee anybody who meets em would probably immediately change their minds.
Ultimately I look at them from two perspectives; on and off the Octagon. To me he's an excellent ambassador albeit with a bad French accent...lolz.

I'll have you know he is a 7th degree black belt in Akido and the Godfather of MMA, he also taught Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida the front kick and thought Anderson the hell knee he landed on Chael, the sweep and and knee technique he landed on Bonnar and he's currently in Southern California teaching Lyoto 'deadly stuff' in order to take out Dan Henderson, so do your research friend, if it wasn't for Master Seagal you'd be watching WWF or Boxing!!!! |
