Dana says Werdum is getting a titleshot if he beats Big Nog
Quote:
Santos and Cain Velasquez, but Dana White was looking down the road at a media roundtable in Brazil on Friday. White spoke to the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil which feature Heavyweight Brazilian Jiu Jitsu masters Antonio Rodrigo "Big Nog" Nogueira and Fabricio Werdum as coaches.
Nogueira is a Pride and UFC great, has held a UFC Hevyweight belt and is one of the best Heavyweight submission artists in MMA history. Werdum is one of those rare athletes with success in both MMA and competitive grappling. A two time ADCC Submission Wrestling Champion and IBJJF World Champion, Werdum is considered one of the best competitive heavyweight grapplers in the world. In MMA Werdum took part in championship tournaments in both Pride and Strikeforce. Werdum and Nogueira actually met back in 2006 in the Pride Openweight Grand Prix, and Nogueira won a decision.
Tatame.com has an account of White said:
Quote:
UFC President, Dana White said on Friday (28) that the Brazilian Fabricio Werdum will be the next challenger for the heavyweight belt, if he wins Rodrigo Nogueira in his next fight in early June.
The statement came during a roundtable with the Brazilian media at the headquarters of Zuffa, in Las Vegas. "Yes. If [Werdum] wins, [he] will have their title shot," said the boss.
|
Werdum has worked hard on expanding his skill set and since moving from Strikeforce to the UFC he is 2-0, showing off very much improved striking. This a important aspect for Werdum to focus on as in 2008 he was knocked out by current champion Junior dos Santos in his UFC debut in 2008.
It has been a very long road back to the UFC and now with one more win Werdum could receive the first title shot of his career.

'The winner of Jon Fitch vs. Thiago Alves will fight the winner of GSP and Koscheck for the title!'
'Lyoto Machida will get another shot at the Light Heavyweight title!'

^I feel like neg repping you every time you say "Breh".
Werdum doesnt really have a chance in there with JDS. Maybe if it somehow hits the ground but that probably won't happen. Will go just like the first.

He'll be waiting a while. You've got to think Reem and possibly Cormier will be the next 2 challengers, assuming JDS wins.

I have learned that just because Dana says it, don't mean its going to happen.
If it does happen I think werdum has shot, slim one but he is in the fight, I think his striking has and will improve. will be a ok fight. imo

I don't understand why Dana says these things so far out. And why he likes fighters to wait.
I like Werdum though, I think he has as good of a shot as a lot of guys. His striking is getting better. We all know about his ground game.
This is just such a stupid statement though. What if Cain wins? What if Overeem then wins? What if someone is hurt? Not sure why Dana feels the need to make title promises so far in advance.
I think Cain/Werdum is an awesome matchup if it came down to it. Werdum would have a legit chance.

Dana probably said that so as to ensure a good showing from Werdum. Might act as motivation for Big Nog as well. I don't think Werdum is getting a title shot even if he wins though. He needs another fight against Struve maybe?
Werdum stands a way better chance against Cain than JDS.
