Philippou wants the winner of Stann-Silva.

UFC middleweight Costa Philippou wants winner of Wanderlei Silva vs. Brian Stann next
Constantinos Philippou is a rising talent in the middleweight division. While he had built up a nice 4 fight win streak he lacked a win against top 20 opposition. Opportunity came knocking when he replaced his teammate Chris Weidman at UFC 155 to fight Tim Boetsch. Philippou came out victorious via 3rd round TKO, giving him the highest profile win of his career.
Nearing the title picture, Costa is taking some time off and aiming for a June return. In an interview with MMA Weekly he expressed interest in fighting the winner of Wanderlei Silva vs. Brian Stann:
Quote:
To be honest I don’t want to fight that soon, I still need some time to recover from my fight, and some time off to relax, but I’m definitely looking at the Brian Stann/Wanderlei Silva fight. I’d like to fight one of those guys if possible," Philippou revealed.
"Brian Stann would be a great match-up for me, Wanderlei Silva if he decides not to retire, I think would be able to put on a great fight. We’re both great strikers and it would be nice to fight a striker for a change and show my striking skills and put up and exciting show."
|
Silva and Stann are the main event of UFC on FUEL in Japan on March 2nd, although this bout is taking place at light-heavyweight. While Wanderlei is clearly in the twilight of his memorable career, Stann was a top 10 middleweight whose only losses at that weight class come against Chael Sonnen and Michael Bisping.
Realistically Stann is more likely to fight Costa than Wanderlei, and if Costa wants to inch himself closer to a title shot he'd be better off fighting Stann. And with Philippou's very good takedown defense and crisp boxing, he could certainly give Brian Stann a good scrap, in my opinion.

If he is gonna wait for the winner of that fight, it is probably gonna be 6 more months or so. Philippou vs Stann and Philippou vs Silva would be pretty decent fights, though I think Philippou needs to fight a higher level guy next. Philippou vs Lombard please!

I'd have no problem with him fighting either, in fact I think they'd both be great matchups!

I'd be very surprised if Wanderlei fights again after this one, that said I expect Stann to brutally KO him anyway.

Philippou/Stann is a step down from Philippou/Boetsch imo, Philippou/Okami should gauge well where he is in his career and be the next logical step up. Wand should just never....fight again

I have a lot of respect for Philippou considering how humble and respectful he comes off. After beating a guy like Tim Boetsch, fighting either Stann or Silva is a clear step down in competition . He shows great patience and modesty through his journey at 185. I doubt he'll beat a top 5 guy in the near future but he's definitely not an easy task for anyone at MW(other than Silva).
with all of that being said, I think fighting a guy like Lombard makes more sense.

I think Stann wins the fight against Silva and then takes a decision against Philippou. No argument to back it up, just how I feel.
Anyway, I don't think Philippou is that excited to fight Anderson Silva. IIRC, he has mentioned a few times in his interviews that he doesn't want to fight Anderson Silva. Probably thinks he doesn't stand a chance. I'm not too sure about how I feel about that...( about him not wanting to fight the champion )

Phillipou is a solid fighter, but he's nothing special. He'll never get a title shot or be a true contender, and at best he'll be a gatekeeper.
I don't like the idea of him waiting for the outcome of a fight that takes place in 3 months, let's throw him in there with Hector Lombard. Lombard would be his toughest opponent to date, and for Lombard it would arguably be a bit of a step down in competition from Palhares, but not much if any. It could prove Lombard wasn't a fluke and establish how good he truly is, while giving Phillipou a challenge to test himself.

Costa's in the top ten now and is a lot better than Palhares is, I'd go for the match up but I don't think anything will be announced with anyone until Vitor and Bisping fight.

After Wandy get's knocked out by Stann (which pains me to say, as he's my favourite fighter!) i hope he retires. Philippou vs Stann would be a good fight though!

To anyone without a wrestling base Okami is a nightmare match up stylistically and people are surprised Philippou is calling for this much more favorable match up instead?
