Eddie Alvarez - 'It's not up to me who I fight for.'

This might belong in the Bellator section but the UFC's trying to sign him so I just put it here, Dana said "this was about to get ugly" it looks like we're about to find out why.

El Bresko 01-05-2013 04:54 PM

How the F could it not be up to him?

Leakler 01-05-2013 05:04 PM

Yeah I just read that tweet, I take it he's not happy with Bellator?

Hammerlock2.0 01-05-2013 05:14 PM

Just an educated guess...

Alvarez wants to fight for the UFC. The UFC has offered Alvarez a deal that Bellator matched. Now the UFC has offered a better deal that Bellator does not want to match so now they're trying to get the UFC to abandon the offer by taking their sweet time to tell them they won't match the offer. If Alvarez fights before Bellator tells him they won't match the deal he gets sued for breach of contract. So now Eddie is caught between a rock and a hard place because if he doesn't fight he doesn't get paid but if he fights he's back in a deal with Bellator.

Because as long as Bellator is willing to match what the UFC is willing to pay him he either has to sign with Bellator or wait out the matching period. I don't know why the UFC just doesn't do a contract Bellator can't match, give him a small PPV % for his first fight or something, Bellator has no PPV revenue so they could not match it. I am sure the UFC could use tricks to get the contract but I think they will have to and Bellator will lawyer up to fight it and the such. This kind of thing was common in Prowrestling when WWF/WCW were at war.

I am guessing the "ugly" prediction from Dana revolved around diffrent wording and what not on the contract. Bellator has less marketing as far as action figures, video games etc. The UFC could also lump in sponsorship etc. Since Bellator could view this as a unfair business practice they will stall it and drag them through red tape. If Eddie needs to fight financially Bellator will hope that the desperation will get him to just resign with them and basically concede defeat.

Basically Alvarez is now a pawn in a UFC/Bellator pissing match.

Sucks really, would love to see Alvarez in the UFC. Surely as you say the UFC could do something about it, no way they can't make a deal that Bellator can't match.

But from the UFC perspective its just as good of an idea to let Bellator have him at an inflated rate that exceeds his value. If they can keep dumping fighters at inflated rates on Bellator they can drive them out of business.
