Despite 3 wins in title fights last year, surely 2 questionable decisions and a beatdown do not a 'Fighter of the year' make?

I think Hendricks without a doubt earned it this year. The guy came from practically no where to knocking out top contenders in less than a round.

I like Bendo so Im cool with it. Plus does it really matter who wins it? Its just a little plaque and a bonus and some exposure.

would guess its one of those things where they count how fighters behave outside of the cage as much as they do how well they fight inside of it.
Bendo must have done the most press conferences and public appearances, etc. He didnt DUI and crash his bentley like JBJ & didn't do anything that might tarnish the UFC and MMA's image.
Silva living in brazil probably did the least number of public appearances, etc.
its like a worker of the month thing?
