Benson Henderson, the reigning UFC lightweight champion, was recently named the 2012 Fighter of the Year by the UFC. Henderson beat out a list that includes champions Jon Jones, Demetrious Johnson, Cain Velasquez and Anderson Silva.

Henderson started the year off by taking the UFC lightweight title from Frankie Edgar in Japan. He went on to successfully defend it vs. Edgar and Nate Diaz, earning three decision victories.

Jones, who finished second on the list, went 2-0 with wins over Rashad Evans and Vitor Belfort. Johnson was third, followed by Matt Brown, Velasquez, Stefan Struve, Cub Swanson, Mike Pyle, Anderson Silva and Costa Philippou.

Henderson joins Jones, Edgar, Georges St-Pierre, Evans and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson as previous winners of the award.

Very disappointing IMO. He had one fight that he won decisively. Anderson, Cain or Johny Hendricks I would have been happy with. I estimate around 75% of the MMA community believes Frankie won the second fight and about 45% think he won the first, for Benson to win this award is a complete travesty.

In a year that saw a lot of injured fighters and very few champions fighting, Aldo, GSP, Anderson, Jones and Cruz all were pretty inactive, Benson had three title fights and never sat out, can't say I blame them.

Seeing Benson win fighter of the year almost makes me laugh. It sort of reminds me of when Dana thought fans voting for GSP vs. Koscheck for FOTN was a complete travesty. Fans never got to vote for FOTN after that. Too bad we can't do the same with Dana after this stupid decision. Anderson making fighters look like chumps isn't good enough?

Boooooooooo - I am disappoint.

Anderson Silva - every year until he loses and I'm not even a fan of his. The guy is just amazing like him or not.

Jon Jones - I can't stand this phony ass but inside the octagon deserves it 10 times more then Bendo.

Cain Velazquez - Not only took back the belt but destroyed someone most of the community thought was going to be champ for the next few years.
