the UFC names their Fighter of the Year for 2012
Quote:
Benson Henderson, the reigning UFC lightweight champion, was recently named the 2012 Fighter of the Year by the UFC. Henderson beat out a list that includes champions Jon Jones, Demetrious Johnson, Cain Velasquez and Anderson Silva.
Henderson started the year off by taking the UFC lightweight title from Frankie Edgar in Japan. He went on to successfully defend it vs. Edgar and Nate Diaz, earning three decision victories.
Jones, who finished second on the list, went 2-0 with wins over Rashad Evans and Vitor Belfort. Johnson was third, followed by Matt Brown, Velasquez, Stefan Struve, Cub Swanson, Mike Pyle, Anderson Silva and Costa Philippou.
Henderson joins Jones, Edgar, Georges St-Pierre, Evans and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson as previous winners of the award.

Very disappointing IMO. He had one fight that he won decisively. Anderson, Cain or Johny Hendricks I would have been happy with. I estimate around 75% of the MMA community believes Frankie won the second fight and about 45% think he won the first, for Benson to win this award is a complete travesty.

This is a joke right?
I can think of at least 5 fighters more deserving than him.
EDIT: Anderson Silva has NEVER won fighter of the year? You have got to be ******* kidding me?!

They probably want to bring people's attention to him, as he will probably become a good ppv deal thanks to it. Seems like UFC expects him to be a long reigning champion with Edgar's leaving.

Bendo will lose his title, he's not going to be a GSP or a Bones from this list, he's going to be a Rashad or a Rampage. If Anderson retires without ever winning FOTY from the UFC then that's some of the most backwards shit i've seen in MMA since Coleman V Takada.

I'm pretty sure you have to be champion to be a FOTY and Bendo was the only one to fight three times last year which I'd bet had a lot to do it. especially capping it all off with a flawless performance.
There wasn't any real contenders for it anyways besides Bendo,Cain and Bones. though personally, i would have given it to Cain. the hype behind JDS was reaching mythical levels and Cain downright dominated him.
Breakthrough FOTY would go to Hendricks,Gus or Cormier.

You don't have to be a champ to win FOTY, a bunch of lower ranked guys almost won it. It certainly helps though, 3 wins, 1 was supposed to be a loss, the other was a toss up. That's not good enough for FOTY for me. Bones in 2nd place? That's bullshit aswell, Bones fought twice and wasn't as impressive as Anderson.
Andy fought a 205er and Bones fought a 185er.
Andy dominated Chael, Bones beat Rashad.
I don't see how one guy can be no.2 and the other no.9?

Eh, if Anderson beat an actual contender rather then Bonnar the i would say he derserved it.
It is really weird that he has never won it though.

Well the World MMA Awards are tomorrow, should be very interesting.
Bones was almost finished by Vitor while Anderson made a complete mockery of a roided Stephan Bonnar(he also made a complete mockery of Vitor, but that's neither here nor there).

For someone who is 1-2 in his last three that's a pretty big accomplishment.
