Mike Dolce confident that Cyborg will be better at 135. Says she beats Rousey anyday.

There have been more than just a few questions about Cris “Cyborg” Santos and her possible move down to 135 pounds for a chance to fight in the UFC and to face women’s champ Ronda Rousey.

When recently appearing on UFC Tonight, former light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz, who serves as one of Cyborg’s MMA managers, commented that he knows a cut to 135 pounds for the former Strikeforce champion would be awfully rough. He even mentioned the possibility of a warm-up fight for Cyborg once she makes the move and debuts in the UFC before facing Rousey with the championship on the line.

The man that will be in charge of getting Cyborg down to 135 pounds will be famed MMA nutritionist and weight cutting guru Mike Dolce, and he’s excited for the challenge and the chance to start working with a high-level athlete like Santos.

“I have every intention of working with Cris Cyborg once her UFC contract is finalized. Right now we’re circling the drain, we’re waiting for the go ahead, but Cris she’s been on vacation in Brazil. If she was here in the United States, she and I already would have been working together. So she’ll be back, her contract will be signed hopefully soon, and as soon as she has a date and an opponent, then it’s game on, I will be working with Cris Cyborg,” Dolce told MMAWeekly.com this week.

Dolce has a history of working with fighters either making a move to a new weight class for the first time, or helping previously troubled athletes cut weight more effectively and in a healthier manner than just sweating it out in a sauna.

He believes his track record is proof enough that he could get Cyborg down to 135 pounds in a healthy way, and she’d be as good at that weight as she ever was in her previous weight class of 145 pounds.

“There’s a couple ways to answer and the first way is going to be a little less than humble – I’m the only guy in the world that can get Cris Cyborg on weight and healthy. I only say that because I have the history. I’m only going to point to my resume when you look at Rampage (Jackson). Rampage was 260 pounds when he came into the fight with Lyoto Machida. He came out there and made 205 pounds easily and he beat Machida. Johny Hendricks is 215 pounds, started working with me, he’s beat (Jon) Fitch, (Josh) Koscheck and (Martin) Kampmann. Johny probably is the biggest welterweight in the UFC, and he’s destined to be a world champion. Thiago Alves, Chael Sonnen was 233 pounds six weeks before the Michael Bisping fight in Chicago,” Dolce explained.

“Nobody can say that any of my athletes ever look unhealthy or ever underperform as a result of their weight cut.”

Dolce had a chance to meet with Cyborg in Los Angeles before she traveled home to Brazil recently, and he knows the kind of unlocked potential she has inside. He hopes to have the key to unleash the beast, and make Cyborg the best 135-pound fighter on the planet.

“She’ll be 135 pounds, it will be the healthiest she’s been her entire career, and it will be the best performance of her entire career or I would not have taken the job. I can’t risk having an athlete underperform as a result of a weight cut. I would never jeopardize an athlete’s health. A lot of athletes come to me and they want me to help them drop a weight class or two, and I’ve turned a lot of huge names down because it’s just not safe, it’s not healthy,” said Dolce.

“At 135 pounds, Cris Cyborg will be the best of her career. She will be the greatest female fighter in the world. She will achieve legendary status at 135 pounds. At 145, she’s too heavy, she’s slower at 145. She’ll be faster at 135, she’ll be more reactive, more flexible, more mobile, and she’ll be stronger. She’ll produce more force per pound of her body weight than she can at 145; I guarantee it.”

As far as the whole idea of a “warm up fight,” Dolce doesn’t get into negotiations for his fighters when it comes to contracts or fight promotion, he leaves that up to them and their management teams. In his mind however, Cyborg won’t need any warming up once she’s working with him and making the move to 135 pounds.

If Cyborg fights Ronda Rousey first, Dolce believes she will be crowned the new UFC women’s bantamweight champion.

“Cris Cyborg could be the world champion today,” said Dolce. “Whenever Cris fights for the title, she’ll win the title. So if they want one fight or five fights, whoever she fights, she’ll beat. Whether it’s Ronda Rousey for the title, or it’s Sara McMann or Miesha Tate, but there’s a lot of tough girls, but whoever she fights, she’ll beat.”

Well i recall Chael looking a bit worn out and sluggish against Bisping. Then Chael confirmed that he had a bad weight cut. Not to mention that i believe a day before the fight Chael confirmed he was 200 pounds or something close to that. Dolce was explaining why that is but honestly i dont see how someone can cut that much weight in 1 night and expect to not feel the effects the next day especially when going in to a fight.

Tito was the one who said she'd die if she tried to make the cut.

Dolce seems very shady to me, he does a good job of getting his guys to make weight(Alves in particular) but Chael looked very bad against Bisping and Anderson under him.

As far as I remember it were also her doctors who strongly disadviced such a big weight cut.

Agree. People should accept biology and that the human body can only cut a finite amount of weight.

She set back women's MMA when she was hit for steroids. I think she is a talented fighter but she's not the total package that women's MMA needed to gain market share. She lacks marketability and integrity.

Equally, Zuffa needs to find a way to market women's MMA other than putting their eggs in one pretty basket. First Gina and now Ronda.

It's interesting how the top three imo have vastly different personalities.

3.) Conviction (not the greatest nickname. I'd like to fire the person who gave her that moniker)
2.) Cyborg
1.) Rousy

There's no doubting the marketability of 3 and 1. Cyborg reminds me of Christy Martin a bit. Relentless attacks like a rabid pitbull. She must have lineage from the Amazonian tribes.

Would be nice to have a tournament with Rousey and Cyborg in different brackets so they meet in the finals, ideally. I know nothing of the division and whose in it, a tournament would have give the feeling of depth and progression. Now it feels like only fights in the division are Rousey/title fights.

What happened to Carano did she retire?

What is it Dolce is doing to cut this huge amount of weight?

Chael was cutting way too much weight for his last couple of fights it was obvious, so Dolce maybe able to get their weight down but whether its a healthy thing he's doing is another question. Draining so much water out of the body has got to cause problems for your brain and some of your organs

Apparently he's creating food and supplements that are so hard for the body to break down that you end up losing weight while they are in the digestive process. Most of the time, they don't even have to do any jogging or pre-weigh in exercises either.

Also, I don't really see the fault that other people are talking about when Chael fault Bisping. As a matter of fact, he out cardio'd him and was dominant in the third round. :confused02:

If Cyborg can make a decent healthy 135 weightcut, im sure she can smash Rousey, and then Dana closes the doors on it. Cyborg is in the Tarec Saffadine situation, doesent matter if she wins the belt, she will never have a chance to even defend it. Its a shame, but Women's MMA in the UFC lives and dies with Rousey as the Champion, after that, the belt is nothing.

Im really starting to dislike Rousey, she comes off as not only a dumb blonde but a complete douchebag on top of it. It gets even more unnerving when Dana White is willing to run into a wall for her.

People are mistaking cutting weight, I.e the type of weight you lose in the days before a fight (water weight) with losing weight, I.e the type of weight you lose permanently through altering your diet.

Cyborg needs to lose muscle mass. Her weight loss needs to be a permanent thing. I think the 'she will die' comments were in regards to if she tries to cut too much water weight.

Cyborg can make 135 if she does it the right way. To say she is too big is rubbish as she wouldn't be as big if she wasn't on the juice. No woman gets that big naturally.

Cyborg is almost underweight for her size. I think losing another ten pounds in muscle won't help much...

Just did some quick math (yeah, nerd). If she lost 10 pounds her BMI would be that of a 16 year old girl*. And she's an athlete too so her BMI should be even higher than a normal person's.

*on fight night

Originally I thought Cyborg going down to 135 would be dangerous. However, if Mike Dolce is confident he can help her get down then I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt. The thing is though if she can make it can she beat Ronda's ground game.
Have to disagree. Rondas whole game is the ground game. When it goes to the ground Ronday again will either armbar or triangle Cyborg. Santos has a lot of power but she'll lose some of that in the cut. If Rousey avoids those viscious kicks and overhands, clinches with Cyborg, then its all over in my opinion.

Cyborg? Cris Cyborg? The most disgusting 'female' to ever grace the face of the earth? The ugliest 'woman' alive? The so-called 'lady' with more testosterone than an army of 16 year-old boys looked in a room with a bunch of pornstars. She's a disgrace not only to femininity, but to sport in general. I find it so offensive to look at her that I immediately want to stab my eye out with a fork upon seeing her gruesome features.

Unfortunately, due to her man strength, I think she beats a lot of fighters. But I hope that is not the case with Rousey who, despite being a female fighter, I support a lot because she's pretty and sassy. I still disagree with female fighting. I think men fighting is natural, due to our immense strength and willingness to protect and impress. Women fighting almost makes me sick. YUCK.

ugh she isn't a diaz brother, she doesn't fight like them or have even the remotely same personality as them, dana really has to cut it out with that comparison just because they hang out with eachother

You're missing the comparison. She has the ATTITUDE as them. 'I do not give a **** about you, and if you have a problem with that, come into the cage where I can hurt you without being arrested.

The problem with Rousey isn't the armbar, it's the hip toss and that she's fighting women. Men have the upper body strength to fend off a hip toss, unless it's REALLY good (Judo was my first of many martial arts). The average super-athletic female is strong in the legs and hips and core, NOT across the chest.

Scramble => body lock => hip toss => side control => armbar

That sequence works WAY better on women than men. It DOES go the other way. Seen many female leglock specialists? It's not the logical attack. Whereas, if yo hnag around judo, women hip tossing other women is a norm. Wider hips, more technique dependent ....

But foremost, NOBODY defends a locked in armbar. (props to Jones, almost nobody.)

You defend the entry move TO the armbar. Carmouche is supposed to be helluva strong, for a 135 girl. I bet she isn't as strong as Cyborg (for whatever reason). So ...

Scramble => body lock =>

THAT is what can't happen if Carmouche had ANY shot

Same for Cyborg

Rousey could armbar before she could WALK. (No shit, he own MOTHER said that.) EVERY scramble favors Rousey. Range favors Cyborg. Can Cyborg resist the temptation to close?

I am quite skeptical, but if Dolce can get it done successfully without it hendering her performance or health, then I hope they do. WMMA needs Cris Cyborg to make this weight.

If and when this fight happens, Rondas going to have to find another way to beat Cyborg, because Cris is on a completely different level from anybody Rondas ever fought. When this fight happens, we're gonna see what Rondas really made of.

...assuming Ronda wins her next fight, always gotta add that part :D

I hope she makes weight and has a warm up fight at that weight first. I wouldn't want to see her face Rousey right away..would make the division boring. Who would be a next, a rematch?

As an aside, I find it a little bit unprofessional for Mike Dolce to say she would beat Rousey any day. He's a nutritionist for hire, I mean in theory he could be hired to work for Rousey some day, so I'm not sure why he would say something like that.
