UFC Code of Conduct announced, fighters now expected to meet 'high standards'

UFC Executive Lawrence Epstein explained the new code of conduct at the beginning of today's UFC on FOX 6 pre-fight press conference:

"It's really two announcements....(Hughes new job) and the second thing is the implementation of a written code of conduct for UFC athletes. As you think about these two announcements, you have to think about them as one. There's gonna be a huge connection with what Matt does and our new code of conduct. One comment on the code of conduct just to take care of that, it really isn't something that's new, just something that frankly for the first time has been put in writing. We've always felt that our athletes need to live up to a high level of conduct and make sure everything they're doing obviously both inside the Octagon and outside is in compliance with the high standards of the UFC."
"This whole situation really started frankly when we took a look at the sports landscape and looked at what all the other major sports leagues were doing like the NFL, Major League Baseball, NHL, et cetera. We also took a look at what some of the associations are doing. I think as many of you know, UFC's relationship with athletes is an independent contractor relationship. It's not like the relationship in the NFL where they're actually employees of the team. We looked at some of those organizations that had similar legal models and what we discovered was those organizations had an individual who was responsible for what they call athlete development and what we're calling athlete development also. The role of that person was first and foremost to be a mentor, to try and provide experience to hopefully keep guys out of trouble and stop guys from making mistakes that could affect both their career and could tarnish the image of mixed martial arts and the UFC."

As I mentioned in the other thread you posted, I am not surprised the UFC is heading this route with the more exposure they are getting through FOX. This is simply a way to make the support more widely accepted by fans and states as well...IE NYC.

I hope while the UFC are introducing new codes of conduct etc they can stop giving out Harley Davisons every other week. You'd have thought that the amount of injuries over the last year that not being allowed to ride motorcycles would be in a UFC fighters contract.

Be interesting to see if they actually make of detailed list of do's and don'ts, as well as defined penalties for same.

If they come out with some hogwash like, "Fighters will exemplify what is best in MMA" or whatever, then they needn't bother.

My bet is it'll be pretty watered down, and intentionally vague/open to interpretation.

lmao, yeah right. Trash talk = money and Dana White loves money. You think he's gonna fine someone for building interest in his product? Get out.

Hughes' job is probably just like Chuck's, a reason for the UFC to keep paying the guys that helped them back when it was UFC/Pride.

Apparently Matt's first job is to build moral after telling the fighters they can't act like pricks anymore.

So he's booked a week's hunting trip to Africa for the entire roster.

Last person to shoot an elephant gets bullied for the rest of the week.

Matt Hughes has Plenty of down falls in his persona there is no need to bring hunting into it. Hunting has been argued and defended quite a few times on this "MMA" forum; and I for one do not need it to condemn Hughes. Matt Hughes though a good fighter in his time was never really one whom I would admire or believe stood the Moral High Ground... Hypocrite Much Mr Hughes

Trash talking will be entertaining for all sorts of paying public in any sport as long they are confined to a certain limit. To ban racist and obscene actions and words, for example, will do only good to the sport and in the end I bet it will bring even more money.
The expression "real fight fan" is intriguing. I think this is a myth. UFC is interest in who pays, regardless of what makes you pay. So the "real fight fan" wouldn't stop whatching Diaz brothers fight if they were prevented from doing what they do, right? But I can see lots of potential paying public being lost by watching their deranged display.

Gonna stay away from all the Hughes talk.

But I do wanna say, this will probably make the UFC look bad. They're going to have this code of conduct but will still probably be as selective in their enforcement as years past. Guys like Torres will get in trouble for things while guys like Evans will not. We certainly won't see Jones' getting punished for his wrong doings.

Most large companies have written codes of conduct employees must sign to be hired.

Honestly, this isn't a big deal at all. ><

Screw up at the top - you just need help. SSDD

Screw up at the bottom - you're screwed. SSDD

Nothing new here.
