Rising to meet the challenge: Tim Sylvia

Okay, first I want everyone to know that I'd like to avoid the ignorant posting that usually occurs when someone sticks up for Tim Sylvia. I am not his "number one fan". I myself have said bad things about him before. But I think alot of people are to hard on him.

My idea is this: Tim Sylvia will rise to meet the growing talent level in the UFC. I think in his early career he didn't have any real challenges (besides arlovski) and that kept him from improving. Plus, when he realized he could win fights by doing nothing but throwing a lazy jab for five straight rounds, he lost his hunger. He got complacent with the belt and that made people hate him. It has happened plenty of times in boxing and MMA. Usually when someone looses the belt they get thier hunger back. Also, if he has to fight guys like Cro Cop and Brandon Vera or some of the other up and coming heavy wieght prospects, maybe that'll give him a reason to improve. I'm not saying that Tim Sylvia will knock out cro cop or even a top contender. But don't count him out yet either.

He's in a tough spot right now. Being a Tim Sylvia fan, I hope he comes to fight like he used to, and I hope he makes his way back toward a title shot. Whether or not some people like Sylvia, he would make for some very interesting fights for a lot of new heavyweights.

I'm not counting Sylvia out because I've seen what he can do, and I know he could get back into the swing of doing it again. Maybe this embarrassing loss to Couture is what he needs to put the fight back in him.

Hell, Brandon Vera vs. Tim Sylvia would be the most logical number one contenders fight right now.

I thought the last two times he would get his hunger back but it didn't happen. That's why I want to see him fight Frank Mir. I know he'll be hungry for this fight. Its the one thing he's been consistantly asking for. I think we'll see the Tim Sylvia of old in this fight. After he destroys Mir I think he'll be in a position where he wants to fight and give the new up and comers a run for thier money. At least that is my take on things!

You forget that this isn't just some brutal sport where everyones out to kill each other. Its much more like a game of physical chess.-looney liam

i hope he gets the hunger back. if i see one more jab-fest i'll never watch one of his fights again. seriously, yellow cards would be great. because he'd have to FIGHT or he'd lose 20% of his paycheque every fight. or be DQed

As much as I cant stand him, I do respect him. Having said that I do think he will come back. I admired his road back to the title when he knocked AA out in their second fight. He came back from his loss worked his butt off and got the title back. He'll be back and he'll be hungry.

I agree he has to get the hunger back. But Big Tim's biggest problem is his own head. He has to get his head back into the game. He says he likes to fight, but his fights (recent ones) don't show that. He needs to quit worring about being the champ and go back to what he says he likes, fighting. Don't worry about winning or keeping the belt, just go out there and have fun amd fight. The rest will be there for him.

Where and when is Frank Mir vs. Tim Sylvia?

Or has it even been confirmed?

Logical maybe, but recent events lead me to believe Tim will get a lesser opponent for his first fight back, while they work to build up a fight like Vera/Arlovski, which could easily be a main event fight.

Here's my take on Tim Sylvia: I don't care if he wins or loses. Hell, I don't care if he gets KO'ed or subbed in the second or third round. I just want him to fight like he did when he faced Cabbage, Telligman, McGee, & Ricco. The guy is really fun to watch when he's ready to throw dem thangs. The HW talent pool just got a little deeper, though, so I just want Tim to have fun fights from now on.
