Dana White: We have the right to match any offer on Rampage Jackson

By Jesse Holland on Jan 28, 12:40p 12

Quinton Jackson could be sent on his way with a handshake and a "thanks for everything." Or, he could be benched until his matching period expires, depending on whether or not ZUFFA wants to keep "Rampage" away from rival promotions.

Following his loss to Glover Teixeira last weekend in Chicago (see it here), former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton Jackson is packing his bags and heading for greener pastures, thanks to a falling out with the ZUFFA brass (and its fans) that started as far back as 2011.

Well, maybe.

While "Rampage" is expected to ply his trade elsewhere, he may find some resistance from his former employer, who has the right to match any offer from a competing promotion. Not that ZUFFA is in any hurry to re-sign the fading slugger, but it could be a way to stick it to a rival in the wake of recent headaches.

From his UFC on FOX 6 post-fight interview:

Quote:
"I said before the fight and I'll say it again after. [Jackson] needs to work for people who can make him happy. I feel like we've done everything in our power for Rampage to make him happy. If there's somebody out there who can treat him better than we have, that's awesome [but] I do have the right to match."
The length of his matching period is unknown at this time, but we know of at least one promoter who's interested.

If this sounds familiar, it's because it is. Former Bellator MMA Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez went from fighting inside a cage to fighting inside a courtroom, all because his contract allows his employer to match any incoming contract, including this one from ZUFFA.

Welcome to limbo, Mr. Alvarez. You may soon have company.

Heh, fair trade Alvarez for Jackson, then again Jackson might get out of his contract by going into boxing/pro-wrestling

Rampage leaving

Let the man go, no one cares anymore, even if he does go fight elsewhere.

After his last two fights, why would they even want to? Rampage is shot.

To return Bellator the favor after the Alvarez issues. Jackson has still the name value, even to non MMA fans due to the A-Team movie. And although he can't hang anymore with UFC's elite, he's not a bum and could play a gatekeeper for quite a while.

Since he keeps talking about how he loves it so much, I think Rampage is not going to Bellator but wants to go to Japan as his first choice.

He shouldn't even bring this shit up considering how he is bitching about Bellator and how they do business.

If you can get Rampage at a decent price, sure, stick it to Bellator.

But the main question will be, how much will they be willing to spend on an aging fighter who is clearly showing signs of slowing down. Bellator already screwed themselves with making Alvarez' potential earnings public knowledge and I would imagine they're going to have to pay a pretty penny for Chandler and Curran when their deals come up. Bellator needs to make good business decisions and spending a lot of money on Rampage isn't a good business decision in my eyes.

If you could get him at say, 70/70 go for it. But this guy doesn't deserve the big paydays anymore and honestly I don't think Rampage would beat Mo if they fought so Bellator should keep that in mind too, he may not even win their title now that they have Mo.

I'm a huge rampage fan, but he's clearly past his prime. However he can still generate profits, the man can still beat most LHW today. Griffin,Sonnen, orWandy vs Page will sell pretty well.

Rampage is damaged goods, his PR skills are shockingly bad, he moans, he whines, he makes excuses, he doesn't take the sport seriously anymore, he doesn't train properly.

Bellator would be pouring money down the drain signing him.

Let him do the Kimbo-style "Pro Boxing" circuit.
