Davis vs. Magalhaes, Kongo vs. Nelson added to UFC 159

Davis vs. Magalhaes, Kongo vs. Nelson added to UFC 159
By staff@mmajunkie.com (MMAjunkie.com Staff)

A pair of new matchups has been added to April's UFC 159 event as Phil Davis (10-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) meets Vinny Magalhaes (10-5 MMA, 1-2 UFC) in a light heavyweight affair, while Cheick Kongo (18-7-2 MMA, 11-5-1 UFC) faces Roy Nelson (18-7 MMA, 5-3 UFC) in a heavyweight contest.

UFC officials announced the two bouts on Tuesday's new edition of "UFC Tonight."

UFC 159, which features a title fight between light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones and "The Ultimate Fighter 17" fellow head coach Chael Sonnen, takes place April 27 at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The evening's main card airs on pay-per-view, and while UFC officials did not reveal where the new matchups would appear on the evening's lineup, both appear worthy of main-card consideration.

The Davis vs. Magalhaes matchup was booked after both fighters openly lobbied for the matchup. Magalhaes started the talk on Twitter, and "Mr. Wonderful" was quick to accept the challenge.

Davis looks to build on the success of a second-round submission win over Wagner Prado in a rematch of the pair's August 2012 meeting that ended in a no contest after the Brazilian couldn't continue after an accidental eyepoke.

Meanwhile, Magalhaes currently boasts a six-fight win streak that includes a September 2012 win over Igor Pokrajac at UFC 152. That bout represented Magalhaes' first win in the octagon after a 2008 run on "The Ultimate Fighter 8" ended with two official UFC losses.

I think Davis keeps it standing and has a good shot at getting the nod in what will surely be a boring sloppy kick boxing match with a lot of grinding on the cage.

Kongo/Nelson is gonna be horrid, mark my words it will be one of the worst fights of the year.

Why do you think Kongo/Nelson is going to be horrid?

Im kind of hoping Davis gets cocky, and takes Vinny down and tries to out grapple him. it'll be more fun that way

Cause Kongo is horrid and likes to clinch against the cage with guys he can't take down and hold them there. I think he will do so then both guys will gas as its just gonna be epically awful.

I think this is a bad fight for Davis. Vinny is world class in the grappling department. As for striking, Vinny may not be good but Davis is just flat out awful. This is a very winnable fight for Vinny and Davis should be ranked higher.

The latest UFC 159 card now includes:

Jon Jones vs. Chael Sonnen - for light-heavyweight title
Phil Davis vs. Vinny Magalhaes
Pat Healy vs. Jim Miller
Cheick Kongo vs. Roy Nelson

Looks good so far.

Davis vs Magalhaes is either a fun fight or an absolutely horrid stand-up battle. Hopefully Davis takes Magalhaes down so as to try and prove a point that he is a great grappler. A terrible stand-up battle will do neither fighter much good even if its a win. Winning decisively via grappling is gonna skyrocket them into the title mix.

Nelson is probably gonna KO Kongo. He is just one notch above Kongo IMO. Kongo has a questionable chin and Nelson has good power.

It is just so dangerous for Davis to turn this into a grappling match. Standing neither of them are that great but Vinny isn't likely to finish Davis standing. Grappling however Davis has a much higher chance of being stopped. Vinny isn't a run if the mill black belt, he is one of the best in the world right now.

I agree. I think Vinny should look to pull guard early. If he can't then he goes into striking mode. He could very well win on the feet if he spend a majority of his camp focusing on it.

The Kongo/Roy fight could be bad. But I think Roy finds his chin.
