Meh be nice to have *something* official even if it's never going to be perfect.

That's exactly how I see it.

It's a step in the right direction, IMO.

The problem is how they are already handling things. They are all over the place with who is getting title shots and matching up fighters with others that should be ranked way below them. It's a circus right now. It worries me that the rankings won't have anything official about them.

Apparently nobody in this thread bothered to actually read the article? The UFC is not adopting "official" rankings, the thread title is misleading. All the article says is that Fight Metric will be conducting polls with members of the media to provide fighter rankings that are up-to-date after every event, but these are not official rankings in the sense that the UFC will not be using them to decide matchups and title shots. They are simply rankings based on the opinions of various members of the media.
The term "official rankings" isn't even in the article...

This is completely pointless. At first when I saw the title of the article I thought they were going to have a ranking system for their match making and make it more like a real sport. But only doing it so fans to see a ranking system based on votes and whatever formula they use is dumb.

1. BJ "The Prodigy" Penn
2. Dan "Hollywood" Henderson
3. George "Rush" St Pierre

Ya, it's basically just a tool for casual fans to see how important certain fighters are so they get to know who's the best, etc. This isn't really even worthy of a thread

Yeah, but they'll be endorsed by the UFC, with said contributors selected by Zuffa. It's hard to believe they won't be pretty subjective and serve Zuffa's agenda.

That said I don't really mind, it's just another rankings list to look at, but I think casual fans might misled into believing it's some sort of objective assessment.

Everybody good, plenty of slaves for my robot colony?

If anything, making fighter rankings public will at least hold the UFC more accountable in regards to title shots. It will also give the media a tool to argue with Dana over match-up decisions (specifically regarding title shots).

It's definitely a step in the right direction.

Media members will vote for top fighters, currently active in the UFC, by weight class and pound-for-pound. A fighter can only appear in one weight division at a time. The champion and interim champions of each division are set in the first and second positions respectively and are not eligible for voting by media. However, champions can be voted on for the pound-for-pound rankings. Media voting is by invitation only and interested media members can apply at UFC.com/Rankings.
Sounds legit.

Yep. I feel that this is a sort of trial run to something more official down the line...
