Anderson Silva's next fight will 'probably' be against Chris Weidman after Rashad Evans loss
By Geno Mrosko on Feb 3, 11:30a

UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva may have recently been talking about fighting Cung Le but according to promotion President Dana White, it looks far more likely Chris Weidman will be next, especially after Rashad Evans' loss at UFC 156 last night (Feb. 2, 2013) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Last night's (Sat., Feb. 2, 2013) UFC 156: "Aldo vs. Edgar" event from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, featured a light heavyweight co-main event with serious title implications at middleweight. Ass backwards, yes, but if Rashad Evans was able to slip by Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, UFC President Dana White was considering booking him in a 185-pound title fight against pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva.

It didn't happen.

"Suga" turned in one of the worst performances of his career, dropping a unanimous decision after three rounds of poking and pawing. In his post-event interview with FUEL TV, White's comments made clear where Evans now stands:

"Rashad didn't do anything tonight. He looked terrible. I've never seen Rashad look as bad."

That leaves "The Spider" once again in search of a suitable opponent. It was just over a week ago that Ed Soares, Silva's manager, bandied about the idea of the Brazilian fighting Cung Le, a challenge the former Strikeforce champion quickly accepted.

Just one problem with that: White thinks it's a "crazy" idea and from the sounds of it, it's not a bout the powers that be at the world's largest fight promotion would even begin to consider.

Couple all this with Georges St. Pierre being busy with Nick Diaz, Jon Jones having his hands full with Chael Sonnen, and Michael Bisping's recent loss to Vitor Belfort, and you're left with only one name.

Chris Weidman.

Just days ago, White revealed Weidman is, in fact, an option and the injury that has kept him out of action for a while is healing nicely and he should be ready to go sooner rather than later. For his part, Weidman has been doing whatever he can to get the fight booked, even offering Silva an immediate rematch at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

As if.

The good news for the top middleweight contender is after UFC 156, it seems White is finally realizing that's the fight that needs to be made.

"I'd say Weidman is next. It's a process dealing with Anderson. I know how this works. It's probably Weidman."

And there you have it. Finally, one of the most talented 185-pound fighters on Earth will get his shot at the best, assuming Silva finally agrees to it.

Sucks for Weidman, he's going to get viciously murdered and set back so early in his career. I would want a tune up fight if I were him, at least to shake off the rust...

OH MY GOD

I was going to have such a mental breakdown if 9-0 Chris Weidman was shafted so bad that he didn't get a title shot right this second. Would have been the biggest travesty in sports history!

So the young apprentice wants his shot. So full of youthful exuberance. He'll get his shot in due time. He certainly poses different challenges. Weidman should be like Glover or JDS accumulating more experience before challenging for the belt. If he wants it then fight the winner of Lombard/Yushin, Vitor, Luke, or even Constantinos.

Baked, not fried... the healthy choice.

yeh because that 9 is a real who's who of elite mma fighters

he gets it by default, like many before him

and i agree that he'd be better served having another fight, more time to get better. now he might blow his only shot at anderson

there's nothing for chris to gain delaying a fight with anderson, if anything it would hinder him and might give anderson more footage to work with regarding his grappling style. Chris is the best middleweight to fight anderson right now there's no contenders other than chris and it would be silly for anderson to either sit out a while or let him fight a bum like cung lee or someone else

you could be right, or is it not a case of him not wanting to lose and then miss out completely. kind of quit while your ahead thing

i agree he is the toughest fight for anderson. just wondering if anderson didnt have a supposed wrestling weakness would this still be the toughest fight?

i know cung le would lose but he is probably a better striker than weidman, or not - just a thought

lombard is interesting too, in the sense of 'toughest fight', not most deserved of course
