UFC 156 Judo chop: Alistair Overeem and Discipline in Striking

Fantastic read and I havn't even finished yet. We're several days removed from the fight so we can now analyze this closely.

Alistair Overeem's knockout loss to Bigfoot Silva highlighted the importance of discipline in striking. Even the best strikers in the world can be knocked out when they behave foolishly. We take a look at how Overeem threw away the fight.

Forget what you have heard about combat sports being about passion and durability - it's wrong. Fighting is a game of smoke and mirrors, and an entire bout should be spent lying to an opponent and hurting him when he believes you. Trickery lands strikes, not fast hands or granite chins.

Every time I learn more about fighting I appreciate Anderson Silva more. We are blessed to be able to watch the best fighter ever. The guy would give Achilles and Hercules a run for their money.

It was his first fight back in 15 months or something like that, against a guy who is coming off of fights against Fedor Emelienenko and Cain Velasquez. I'm gonna give Overeem a break on this one and bet that he rebounds well after he adds some more mass the right way. He had won like 12 fights in a row, and Cro Cop said it best, he got put in his place. Doesn't mean hes a bum and will never win another fight. I still believe he is a great fighter and still the best striker in the world when hes on his A-game.

I agree with the Striking aspect though. IMO, Fedor was the best because he could wiggle his left wrist and his opponents would be looking at it then he slams them with the right. SO, ya, I agree.

Jack Slacks breakdowns are always top notch. The dude has an understanding of the striking game like few others.
