Lebron is bigger, faster(maybe) and stronger. I think he is the better pure athlete. If they were both placed in 10 random sports incl. track and field events then I think Lebron would be the victor in the majority.

Its a great list that left a few good ones out. I too believe LeBron should be on that list. At 6'8" he moves likes he is six feet tall. He can dribble, run, jump and shoot as good as anybody else. In addition he is built like a tank. A very rare combination indeed. Unfortunately for TV watchers is its a little hard to comprehend. If you ever see LeBron play in person you will be in awe.

Lebron can't hit major league pitching and he couldn't compete at an olympic level in track and field. Lebron is a specimen, he's just not as well rounded as Bo Jackson.

"Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man."

I won't say that you're wrong but it's an interesting discussion. I found this that expresses my views on it pretty well

Now, racecar drivers spend on average over 2 hours in their cars at a time. Their heart rates during the race average 140 bpm. This is the same heart rate experienced by a professional runner during a marathon. On top of that, the interior of a race car can reach temperatures of 120 degrees, well more than a marathon runner experiences.

Open wheel drivers may have some leeway in temperature, as they drive open cockpit vehicles. However, open wheel race cars do not operate with power steering, and therefore can often put heavy wear on the drivers biceps and hands. In addition, the drivers face almost 6 g's of body acceleration when taking high speed corners. The average, untrained human will pass out at 5 g's.

Finally the biggest part of being a racecar driver is the mental training. The mental endurance of racecar drivers far exceeds any other sport out there. For 2 hours (or even more in the case of endurance races (ex. 24 Hours of Le Mans)) the drivers must stay fully concentrated, as even the slightest slip will end their day. After such long periods of concentration, mental fatigue sets in heavily, and concentration becomes harder and harder.

So, I'm not saying that you're wrong in your belief that a racecar driver isn't an athlete. But now what do you really think is the truth? I know I consider myself an athlete in as good of shape as anyone else.

The list really should be called 'Greatest American sportsmen of all time, plus a few token foreigners."

"John Brenkus will unveil the winner of each bracket matchup on "SportsCenter" based on a series of metrics including speed, strength, durability, reaction time and much more."

So I guess it's not really based on voting at all...interested to see what they come up with although it's bound to be full of holes.

Let's compare Silva and Phelps. Durability would goto Phelps, and strength I would imagine..everything else 'athletic' related I would imagine goes to Silva.

I would lean towards Lebron as probably the most amazing athlete the human race has seen..his quickness and skillfulness for someone so large and powerful is astounding.
