UFC News UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche Bas Rutten: 'Machida doesn't have a

Very interesting thoughts from Da Man. I agree with Bas I think Hendo takes this.

Quote:
For as hung up as MMA fans get on his general level of awesomeness or shouting of "liver shot," Bas Rutten is one of the few guys in his role who seems willing to speak completely honestly about what he thinks of fighters. Bas talked at length several times before Bigfoot knocked out Overeem about how Overeem has a "glass jaw" and, despite getting some heat from fans, was ultimately able to gloat in the wake of that fight.

Bas spoke to MMA Interviews and, aside from again talking about the Overeem loss, dropped a little more lightly controversial thoughts on a top level fighter:

Dan is the man's man. Like any guy on the planet, they love Dan because Dan's got a lot of heart and he always comes to fight. I always get emotional because he's really that guy. And that's why I want to see him win, and I think that Dan has really the chance because he knows when he lands the 'H-bomb' everybody knows it...it's gonna be goodnight. And I know Machida...I'm gonna get a lot of heat now...Machida doesn't have a lot of weapons, but whatever he does, he does REALLY well. He's got great distance, he got great accuracy but his attack is always the same. It's a cross-hook, a cross, or a kick and a cross. And when you push him he always moves to the same side. So if Dan would look at that and just bullrushes him, he knows he's gonna end him up *points* there. Just throw a big hand there and that could stop him.

Disagree with Bas here. Machida's attack is a hundred times more diverse than Hendo's. I'm not saying Hendo can't land that punch, he seems to be able to land that telegraphed right or left overhand on pretty much everyone he fights, but 'just bullrushing' Lyoto is not the way unless you want to get knocked out.

Bas might be onto something...

If Hendo had more than an overhand right, an inside leg kick and takedowns. Machida is ten times more diverse than Hendo. Doesn't mean Dan can't win but to criticize Machida for always fighting the same and not giving Hendo the same criticism is ridiculous.

Those are his main weapons. What he and most people don't understand is his movement taught by his father. The zig zag and pivot moves that confuse majority of his opponents.

- feints
- stance
- sumo side throw he did against Thiago Silva
- liver knee shot to (Tito)
- I think he has an under rated ground game he should utilize (nice arm in triangle sub on Sokoudjo)
- low kick to a punch combo
- flying crane kick

He is right about opponents bum rushing him and landing a big right while he tends to circle to his left. That'll be a big question mark. Bisping paid dearly for that.

Machida has to watch out for that power right and not engaged in a brawl like he did against Shogun. Shogun is a lot quicker than Hendo though.

I think Machida is going to confuse the hell out of Hendo with Hendo putting his arms in the air trying to get him to engage. I really wish Hendo fought the LHW title holder. If he loses it's unlikely he'll get another shot ever again.

I think Bas is right and wrong at the same time.
Dan might very well knock Machida out. The reason being Machida hasn't got the chin of a guy like Shogun who is pretty much the only guy lately that has survived Hendos barrage.

The fault IMO doesn't lie with Machida, his attacks are more diverse than most of all fighters in the game. The problem lies with Hendo, as much as a one trick pony that he is he still knock way better strikers out due to riddiculous power, chin & confidence.

Hendo can rush his opponent in a way that not many fighters can because of the confidence in his own chin, hence not being affraid of the counter. And also the fact that he hits riddiculously hard & usually one punch means goodnight.

Hendo doesn't really have good technical boxing but he does have some amazing things that you have to be born with, that can't be trained or trained for.

If Machida is smart he will be extremely careful, stay far away from Hendo, make the old man gass and then take him out.
I think if Machida engages Hendo early he will get put to sleep. Hendo takes three or four to give one & will be the one standing anyway.
And even if he tries to stay way I'm not sure he can get away from Hendo rushing him. But if this fight goes beyond the second round I say Machida absolutely kills Hendo.

I don't care who is more diverse. Machida is.

But Dan will win. Dan can be on the most impressive run in the sport and people still give him little chance. Those people are all dumb, and will eat their words again. Same people that said Shogun had too many weapons and enough of a chin to win. Same that said Fedor is better at everything. Those people look foolish time and time again.

I don't think people look 'foolish' for thinking Shogun would, or could win that fight. Really? It was an exceptionally close fight, and Henderson gassed horribly in the last two rounds, he could have easily lost that fight, the same way he gassed horribly against Sheilds and lost after hammering him.

Obviously Henderson can beat Machida, but making sound like it's some kind of fait accompli is just silly.
