Constantinos Philippou vs. 'Jacare' Souza targeted for UFC on FX 8 in Brazil

MMA NewsFriday, February 15, 2013
A middleweight bout between surging contender Constantinos Philippou (12-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) and former Strikeforce champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza (17-3 MMA, 0-0 UFC) is expected to be part of UFC on FX 8 in May.
A source close to the event told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) at least one fighter has agreed to the bout. MMAFighting.com first reported the planned matchup.
MMAjunkie.com recently passed along news of UFC on FX 8, which takes place May 18 at Arena Jaragua in Jaragua do Sul, which is located in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina.
The main card, including a Vitor Belfort (22-10 MMA, 11-6 UFC) vs. Luke Rockhold (10-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) middleweight headliner, airs on FX following prelims on FUEL TV and Facebook. Philippou vs. Souza also is expected to be part of the main card.
Since suffering a decision loss to Nick Catone in his UFC debut, Philippou has posted five consecutive wins. The Serra-Longo Fight Team striker most recently replaced injured Chris Weidman and scored a TKO victory over fellow contender Tim Boetsch. The former Ring of Combat champion also has picked up octagon wins over Riki Fukuda, Court McGree, Jared Hamman and Jorge Rivera during his move into title contention.
Souza, meanwhile, makes his UFC debut following an eight-fight stint in Strikeforce. Since losing his title to Luke Rockhold via close decision in late 2011, the world-champion grappler has posted consecutive stoppage wins over Bristol Marunde, Derek Brunson and Ed Herman. He's now 7-1 since a DREAM.9 no-contest with Jason "Mayhem" Miller in 2009.

Potentially epic fight there, get to see what Philippou's submission defence is like.
Jacare will prove too much IMO, his stand up has improved soooo much these past few years.

That's catering to the Brazilians for you
Seriously a good matchup though, classic Submission guy vs Striker.
Love it

I think Jacare wins but Philippou is so tough I have a hard time seeing him dominated. Winner of this fight should be up there "in the mix".

Philippou just beat up Boetsch who was close to a title shot, with the merge of Strikeforce Jacare is a top 5-10 threat like Philippou, top fighters need to face off..not sure how this is garbage match making, it's kind of common sense when the test of the division is busy
Okami vs Lombard - March 3
Stann vs Silva - March 3
Carmont vs Larkin - April 20
Bisping vs Belcher - April 27
Belfort vs Rockhold - May 18
Weidman vs Silva - July
Who is left for either guy?

Yeah he just doesn't have the "name" right now I guess but he is a worthy opponent for sure. Just like how Te Huna isn't really well known to casuals but he's getting really close to that "mix".

Sweet fight, Jacare will eat him up....phillippou has been impressive, he has obvious flaws in his game but his strengths are very dangerous, hes no easy fight for anyone (except for AS obviously)...i expect jacare to win but i would be very impressed if he walks through phillippou
On another note i think Jacare should consider dropping to WW if its possible, he'll be "in the mix" after this win but we know he wont fight AS...or maybe it would be better to go up to LHW...not many contenders there and now that i think of it he is pretty damn big

LOL...This is a horrible matchup Jacare is going to tool CP. I really wanted a Weidman vs Jacare fight.
I really like CP but he is just not ready for what Jacare brings to the table. BTW... Jacare is the real Strikeforce Champ...
