I agree. I really don't care what tactics they use to sell fights, as long as they make good fights and what happens in the cage is real, I'm good.
Combat sports will always have an element of building characters and making fights that will sell most. That well never change.

People on online MMA forums don't really grasp the business end of things and they just want to see the best stylistic matchups, which I get as they're a fan of the sport. But in reality people want to see compelling, entertaining, big-name fights. Now maybe it's going too far with all these ridiculous title shots being given out, but I understand the purpose. I'm against Weidman getting a title shot since he's a virtual unknown outside of hardcore MMA fans, but I'm not against Silva-Weidman just because the division is so dire right now.

Weidman has main evented that hardly makes him "virtually" unknown. John Moraga whose fighting for the Fly weight title after two event openers that is "virtually" unknown. We've gone through two weight classes looking for "named" challengers and they've all lost (Bisping, Evans, Lombard) so unless you want Belfort/Silva II (which is fine) Weidman it is.

Well, AS won't have a reach advantage against Weidman and if Weidman can get it to the ground he can be a beast. I still think beating Bader and Davis in college is pretty impressive. However, we're still talking about Anderson Silva here. He's got an aura like no one else in the UFC, Weidman will need to come prepared mentally just as well as physically.

That sounds more like an argument for Weidman not getting the shot.
I am fine with the fight. Andy tried to make the GSP fight happen but he got ducked. Weidman is the number one contender however unearned that is because of circumstances.

Circumstances being Silva not being an active fighter and all other contenders losings?
Chris Weidman is not only deserving of a title shot but looking at the other title contenders in other divisions(Moraga(Fly), Pettis(FW), Melendez(Lw), Diaz(WW), Sonnen(LHW), and Silva(HW) he is the most deserving of all the title contenders. He wasn't murdered by the champ(Silva), he's won in the UFC in that division (Melendez, Pettis, Sonnen), he isn't coming off a loss (Diaz), a suspension (Diaz), a year layoff(Diaz) or from opening UFC cards (Moraga).
Chris Weidman has unequivocally earned his title shot. If you want Silva to fight other guys take it up with Silva, he should be fighting more not less. If he wants to fight the Cung Le's and Michael Bispings of the world great! beat Weidman first and open yourself up to take those fights. As for this notion of it being "bad business" you know whats "bad business" not fighting you know whats "good business" fighting. You want to make a million buys sure you can do it with one super fight you can also do it with three other fights.

How on earth is a Welterweight ducking a Middleweight? If Anderson really wants those fights he'll go to their weight.
Besides if Anderson loses to Weidman all his records except consecutive wins are reachable. And if Anderson signs a ten fight deal he will eventually lose, he's not in his mid-twenties like Jones, he's nearing forty and when his reflexes and timing goes he's screwed.

I'm not entirely sure how anyone can be against Weidman getting the shot.
Not as if they are lining up at MW.

Here's what should of would have happened.
#1.) GSP super fight. The stars were aligned finally. Everybody knows what happened unfortunately.
#2.) Lombard after he beat Boetsch.
#3.) Bisping if he won against Vitor.
#4.) Belcher might have gotten it if he got past Okami.
#5.) Rashad if he defeated Lil Nog.
So really by default Weidman gets it although I would have wanted to see him fight Vitor. It was a process of elimination.
Ironically Weidman is the greatest threat on that list next to Rashad. He's a rookie so he doesn't have anything to lose or fear. He's doesn't know what it feels like to get KOed, submitted, TKOed, or even lose yet. So his confidence will be very high up there and he's going to attack going for broke.
A very interesting title fight indeed.

why vitor? vitor is not a great fighter and he got his head kicked off already and smashed by jones as well, and he is a crazy fool who i hope drives off a cliff while holding a church seminar in his car. Weidman is the prefect fight to make in any div.
