UFC on FOX 7: Frank Mir says Daniel Cormier can't finish fights unless the referee does it for him

Daniel Cormier has finished five of 11 wins by way of knockout or technical knockout. But how many of those victories have come by way of referee's mercy?

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir left Las Vegas to train with Greg Jackson in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in order to change the way he trains (see why here) in advance of his upcoming UFC on FOX 7 main event against Daniel Cormier on April 20, 2013, in San Jose, California.

One thing he isn't changing is his pre-fight smack talk.

Mir was thoroughly unimpressed with his opponent's ability to finish recent fights. While he originally thought "DC" went five rounds against Josh Barnett because "The Warmaster" is an accomplished ground fighter, Cormier's subsequent scrap against Dion Staring suggested he just may not have the ability.

From his conversation with MMA Fight Corner:

Quote:
"I pretty much know the guy. He has extremely strong, efficient wrestling. I think he throws his hands pretty fast and without abandon. I don't think he's the most technical boxer in the world, I don't think he even thinks he's the most technical boxer in the world. He's definitely not JDS, but who is? On the ground though, it really showed me, let's face it, if I had the same guy on the ground, fight would have ended pretty quickly. He wasn't able to put the guy away through a lack of finishing abilities, through a lack of finishing moves. So that's one thing that actually surprised me. I thought he couldn't finish Josh because of Josh's abilities, but then I realized 'No, he doesn't really have much finishing ability'. He can catch you with a punch, let's face it, every heavyweight over 200 pounds has that ability to finish a fight if he catches you. But you got to have the ability to finish with the submission, you know definitive ground and pound, where you actually finish somebody off against the cage and it's menacing, not just finally the referee's like 'Well, you know, I guess the guy's had enough. You really can't put him away, let me help end this fight for you.'"
Ouch.

Mir (16-6) hasn't seen action since losing a heavyweight title fight to Junior dos Santos in the main event of UFC 146 last May. Initially scheduled to face Cormier in what would have been "DC's" final Strikeforce fight, the hulking grappler suffered a training injury and was forced out of the contest.

See how their bout was resurrected here.

Now, he'll have an opportunity to get himself right back into the title mix should he become the first man to defeat the former Olympian, especially since "Cigano" was knocked off his perch last December. And hey, when all else fails, there's always the "Frank Mir curse."

Anyone in agreement with his scouting report?

Mir is an idiot. I hope he talks a bunch of crap. Only makes it funnier when Cormier does finish him.

Mir has really been talking up his ground game since Nog....except he lacks the ability to get it there.

Let's see what he says after he is curled up in a ball against the cage. Let's see which one calls for the ref to stop the fight first...

This is a baaaad match up for Mir. Cormier will likely utlilize his superior wrestling and wear Mir out to earn the decision.

Joe Silva has a fetish for matching the tallest heavyweight with the shortest.

Stefan Struve has fought Roy Nelson, Pat Barry and Mark Hunt.

Cormier vs Struve can't be far off the horizon.

It doesn't matter if Cormier wins or loses against Frank Mir, I'm sure he'll be fighting Struve next.
