UFC cuts Lavar Johnson following failed drug test, UFC 157 loss

by Steven Marrocco on Mar 21, 2013 at 3:15 pm ET

On the heels of a nine-month suspension, heavyweight Lavar Johnson (17-7 MMA, 2-2 UFC) has been cut by the UFC.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today confirmed the news with a source close to the fighter.

Johnson leaves the octagon with a 2-2 record, which included back-to-back losses in his most recent fights.

Johnson, who trains with the American Kickboxing Academy, flunked a drug test following a fight with Brendan Schaub at UFC 157, which ended in a unanimous decision loss. An elevated testestosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio of 6.6-to-1 triggered a carbon isotope ratio (CIR) test that confirmed Johnson had testosterone in his system that was "was consistent with the administration of a steroid."

Johnson, though, admitted he was undergoing testosterone replacement therapy in a recent conversation with the California State Athletic Commission, which oversaw the Feb. 23 pay-per-view event at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., and suspended him based on the results of his test.

Johnson failed to disclose TRT on a pre-fight medical questionnaire. A rep for AKA said the fighter may seek an exemption for the treatment.

The hard-swinging heavyweight won back-to-back "Knockout of the Night" bonuses in his first UFC appearances, but struggled with his grappling in subsequent bouts. Prior to his octagon debut, Johnson went 3-2 in the now-defunct Strikeforce, falling prey to submissions in his last two performances.

Fifteen of Johnson's wins have come by way of stoppage due to strikes.

UFC's Lavar Johnson suspended nine months, fine to be determined (updated)

by Steven Marrocco on Mar 21, 2013 at 2:00 pm ET

UFC heavyweight Lavar Johnson has received a nine-month suspension from the California State Athletic Commission after failing his post-fight drug test at UFC 157.

A concurrent fine hasn't been set, but could range between $1,000 and $1,250, according to CSAC Executive Officer Andy Foster.

Johnson (17-7 MMA, 2-2 UFC), who lost a unanimous decision to Brendan Schaub (9-3 MMA, 5-3 UFC) at the Feb. 23 pay-per-view event, said he won't appeal the suspension, Foster today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

In a recent discussion, Johnson admitted he was undergoing testosterone replacement therapy, Foster said, but failed to disclose it on a pre-fight medical questionnaire.

Heidi Seibert Adams, a PR rep for American Kickboxing Academy, said Johnson may seek an exemption for the treatment in the future. She added that as of yet, the UFC has not taken any punitive action against the fighter.

Foster initially said Johnson had been flagged for elevated testosterone, but today clarified that an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone (T/E) ratio of 6.6-to-1 triggered a carbon isotope ratio (CIR) test that confirmed the testosterone in Johnson "was consistent with the administration of a steroid."

The CSAC's acceptable T/E ratio is 4-to-1, which mirrors that of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

All other competitors tested at UFC 157 came back negative for performance-enhancers and drugs of abuse. The event took place at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

Strikeforce vet Johnson opened his UFC career with a pair of highlight-reel knockouts over Joey Beltran and Pat Barry, but stumbled with losses to Stefan Struve and Schaub.

Another one bites the dust. I believe he's the fourth of fifth guy to be suspended this year?

LMAO. This is a new creative twist on the TRT excuse. Whatever happened to the good old days when athletes used to blame their managers/coaches for giving them a supplement that turned out to be steroids.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo! That sucks. I was a huge fan of his fighting style.

CupCake 03-21-2013 04:40 PM

Faceplam moment for sure, but with the UFC clamping down on this crap he's got no one to blame but himself, I couldn't see them being particularly sympathic to his case....silly boy!
