GSP, Chan Sung Jung and the infamous gi...

I guess I understand Jung's beef with GSP's rising sun gi and headband. While misplaced and hyper-sensitive, Jung's feelings toward that symbol have merit from his standpoint. I am 100% sure GSP wore his gi and headband to honor karate's origins, and probably because they look cool, not to disparage Korean history.

Here is my question:

Why is this an issue now, in 2013? Hasn't GSP been wearing the same gi and headband to the ring every fight? I can only remember him in a gi and headband. Is this particular Hiyabusa version with the rising sun a new one?

I think this is a totally overblown and ridiculous issue for him to have to address and apologize for.

Yes, this is a new version.

I can understand the point being made here by the Zombie .. would it be bad form for Black MMA fighters to complain if GSP wore a Swastika on his Gi? I personally think they would be more than justified, as are the Koreans given what the Japanese did to them under that ensign.

That said, GSP obviously didn't do this on purpose, so a simply "sorry" to the Zombie, and no longer wearing a Gi with that symbol is the appropriate response for GSP.

Two different symbols, apparently.

Sun with no rays = good

Sun with rays = bad

I think Swastikas offend almost every normal person... Lol at "Black" people being more offended than maybe... Jewish people.

No, Swastikas offend most people in Western countries, but not necessarily in Asia or Africa, because the latter weren't at war with Nazi Germany and didn't suffer under them. The Rising Sun flag offends a majority of Asian people, but not so much Western people, because the latter didn't suffer under the Imperial Japanese army.

I guess those issues are hard to grasp for Americans as they never really had a war in their country in recent history. The closest to showing the Rising Sun flag for Asians would be showing banners that appreciate the terror attack of 9/11/2001 to Americans. And in those attacks there were "only" 4000 people killed, while in WW II MILLIONS of civilians were killed plus more atrocities like systematic r@pe and other war crimes.

I'm am not Jewish nor do I know anyone directly affected by the Holocaust. You don't have to be to share empathy for the millions murdered.

And I never said the rising sun image wasn't offensive to Asian people so that little rant was unwarranted...

A Swastika is never worn on accident. A rising sun is. To not see the difference is retarded. In that letter KZ kinda treated it like he meant to offend people. SO DUMB.

It wasn't a rant. It was an explanation as to why Westerners and Asians perceive the Swastika and the Rising Sun flag differently.

No, Chan Sung Jung treated it like St. Pierre wore that symbol because of lacking knowledge, hence he explained what it means to a majority of Asians.

And yes, the Swastika is also sometimes used by accident/lacking knowledge, even with association to the Nazi context: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_Cafe or plain dumbness:

without the Nazi context it's used in big parts of the world as a religious symbol: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika

And that's what I tried to explain. The Swastika and the Rising Sun flag are perceived differently in different parts of the world depending on their historical connection of those parts of the world to the respective symbols.
