Rewatching Rory MacDonald vs Che Mills....

Wow, beautiful Mills got destroyed!! I wonder though, because they have similar physiques, yet Rory completely annihilated Mills!! Was Rory stronger than Mills? Mills seems like a pretty strong guy...

At first I thought it was because Mills had no ground game, but he seemed to be doing everything right on the ground, and I would know having done BJ extensively for 2 years. But Rory completely controlled him. Rory i was always a fan of, but he became uber cooler to me after that fight, and showed why BJJ is the most important aspect of MMA.

Anybody else have any thoughts about this fight and why it went down the way it did?

Well depending on who you ask, Rory is either that good or that acne on his back gives him 'magical powers'

Mills has a pretty good defensive guard but was not much of a match for the heavy top game of Rory and the brutal GnP that goes with it.

You would know everything to do right on the ground in mma because you did BJJ(which is what I assume you meant) for TWO YEARS!!! Wow....you're an expert. Also it was Rorys wrestling that made him so dominate in that fight.

Rory was for stronger physique has far more to do with body fat than it does strength. So them looking similar doesn't really mean a whole lot.

On topic Rory may hit very hard but what makes his gnp scary is his accuracy. He doesn't swing wild he lands clean and is very deliberate with his whole game.

That's what im saying. Ive been training bjj for 3-4 years and mma for the last year. I notice alot of obvious stuff but when i watch the gracie break downs i see a whole new dimension of things i didn't see during the fight.

And strength < technique. Always.

Mills also got controlled on the ground by Riddle (not nearly as bad as he did by Rory). The guys ground game isnt very good.

Not always. If a guy is strong enough you aren't going to be able to do what you want on the ground. Brock vs. Mir is a good example of this. Mir is 100x, 500x, even 1000x better on the ground than Brock could ever be, but Brock very easily controlled him with raw strength and very basic technique.

I would say if the strength margin isn't that big, someone is stronger but not THAT much stronger, then yeah the strength doesn't really matter. However if a guy IS that much stronger, then yes, strength can overpower and outweigh the technique.

I thought Mills looked good on the feet and game Rory some problems. The difference in wrestling was very noticeable though, and when Rory gets on top he's an absolute beast.

Rory Mac is a beast! Recently rewatched his fight with Condit and can't believe how good he looked in those first 2 rounds til he gassed. Future champ for sure
