Fighters you have/had a lot of hope for

I was thinking about how within the last year and the year to come there have been/are fighters entering the UFC with a lot of hype behind them, or are/were on a dominant streak but got beat in a disappointing way. So my question to MMAF, do you have any fighters that you had a lot of hope for and have lost in this way? Similarly, are there upcoming fighters who you think are going to be derailed?

A couple for me:

Welterweight: Carlos Condit - I didn't expect him to beat GSP, but when he performed arguably the best someone has against GSP, he became one of my favorite WW's. His loss to Hendricks was unexpected, I thought Hendricks was going to get slapped down and derailed, but instead I was proven wrong about Condit. Now Condit doesn't seem like someone who will be able to take the WW title.

Heavyweight: JDS - This is more of a predictive choice for me. His loss to Cain was such a dominating one that I don't actually believe he's capable of beating Cain in the future. Cain brings a skill set similar to GSP does at WW, where it's hard to attack him without exposing yourself to the TD, or at least the threat of it. I'm excited to see the first match after his loss, but I don't think JDS will hold the HW title as long as Cain is motivated.

Paul Daley definitely. He went on from almost getting a title shot against GSP to becoming a bum really.

Paul's still UFC caliber, if they'll ever take him back that is. He almost beat Diaz for strikeforce title (best round Ive seen).

Personally, I always feel disappointed by Bisping, twice he gets within touching distance of a title shot then gets knocked out.

Its not easy being a Bisping fan :dunno:

Condit's fight against Hendricks was far from disappointing imo. He fought a great fight but Hendricks was just hungrier and did what he had to in order to get the win.

I am mainly disappointed in younger guys that just don't seem able to put everything together but if they did would be competitive at the highest level in their divisions. Guys like Struve and Guillard.

One fighters I had hope for that didn't pan out was Lesnar. The guy was huge and extremely strong but couldn't learn to strike to save his life.

Makes sense. I suppose I thought Condit would be better prepared with his TDD after having just trained for GSP. If I recall correctly, in the first round and a half, Condit was taken down with a fair amount of ease. I would liked to see him get a double-underhook clinch and work dirty boxing.

Lesnar's an interesting choice, I too admired his athleticism. His top control in Mir 2 was impressive. And of course the haymaker that shattered Herring's orbital.

Had you watched Condit prior to his fights in the UFC? I guess that is why I wasn't that disappointed with Condit's tdd because I knew it wasn't great nor never will be as he relies too much on his sweeps and submissions.

Another fighter that pops into my head is Marquardt, just never able to put all his skill together to be a truly great fighter.

Bobby Lashely - I had really high hopes for him, considering Lesnar was the champ back then as well. Who knew a man could have such a terrbile cardio while being in top shape..

I still have high hopes for Condit. In my opinion his only loss in the UFC was against GSP. :dunno:

Currently I have some high hopes for Gunnar Nelson, Michael McDonald and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

I had some hope for Pablo Garza but it didn't work out for him so far. Same goes for Paul Sass.

I still have hopes for Frank Mir to get into contention again, if he backs off the mass and just gets a bit quicker he could get up there again.

Kenny Florian - I really, really wanted him to hold a belt. I hope good things for him.

Frank Mir - He's accomplished, but he defeats himself sometimes. You see the emotional exhaustion in him some times before the fight even starts. He could have been more dominant.

GSP - The greasing, inability to finish fights, and now the weight drama. He's never quite what I picture he could be.

Stephan Bonnar - Dude... WTF?

Brock Lesnar - If he would have just went to Greg Jackson at the start of his MMA career....
