Gonzaga to Challenge Loss to Browne

http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2013/4/14...vis-browne-mma

Quote:
Going into Saturday night's The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale, Heavyweight Gabriel Gonzaga had strung together two consecutive first round submission victories. He looked to continue the pattern when he faced off against Travis Browne. Gonzaga pressed the action against Browne early, pushing his back against the fence as he worked for a single-leg takedown. Browne countered the attack with some devastating elbows that dropped Gonzaga and finished the fight.

Many have complained that, at the very least, the final shots of the fight illegally struck the back of the head. Tatame reported on Sunday night that Gonzaga's team would challenge the official ruling from the NSAC:

We appeal to the Nevada State Athletic Commission because we think were the illegal elbows neck. Whenever we had accepted any defeat, but this was illegal. The Gonzaga okay, thanks for the support.

The translation is rough at best, but still succeeds in getting across the point that Gabriel's team is looking to challenge the ruling. We'll see over the coming weeks whether or not Gonzaga's appeal is successful.

I mentioned this in their official fight thread... but I don't think Gonzaga has a case here.

Quote:
I completely disagree; there were a total of 6 elbows thrown. The first two were very obviously on his left ear.

The third elbow started dropping him and it was located above the ear (but not in the 'mowhawk section'. The 4th elbow completely put him out. If you watch the gifs, Gonzaga slumped over causing the angle of his head to change, causing an off angle attack.

For elbows 5-6, Browne readjusted his angle and the contacted they right ear.

The only questionable elbow is the 4th one... which I can easily attribute to Gonzaga's head angle suddenly changing. Browne immediately corrected the angle for his last 2 elbows.
Very similar surrounding to the ending of Anderson vs Sonnen II. Huge uproar from people screaming illegal strike. I just don't see much merit in it.

I kind of thought this would happen after all of the arguing over it.

I don't blame him. I really don't like Gonazga and actually wanted Travis to win, but 5 out of 6 of those elbows were straight to the back of the head.

I don't blame Travis for it due to the ref standing right their and not saying anything though.

Some were illegal and Gonzaga is in the right even if it does seem petty.

I have no idea how you came up with that. There were a total of 6 elbows. 1-2 and 5-6 were very clearly placed on their respective ear. The only two elbows you could even question were 3-4, but it's really hard to place elbows like that when a dude is slumping over.

I agree with Gonzaga challenging the loss... he got nailed over and over and over in the back of the head with elbows.

At least 2 of the elbows were blatantly illegal, and even if Gonzaga was out by that point, an inquiry should still be had. Processes exist for when rules are broken, and even if a Committee ultimately throws this out, it doesn't mean Gonzaga shouldn't have made the attempt. He has a legitimate bone to pick.
