UFC's Gegard Mousasi teases potential move down to middleweight

by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Apr 17, 2013 at 5:45 pm ET

gegard-mousasi-18.jpgFollowing his win over late replacement Ilir Latifi earlier this month at UFC on FUEL TV 9, light heavyweight Gegard Mousasi could be going lighter for his next bout.

Mousasi (34-3-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) , who's 21-1-1 over his past 24 fighters, hinted at a potential move down to middleweight.

Quote:
"Hey everybody, what you think about if I go to 185?" he tweeted today. "I am curious what people think about this idea."
The 185-division isn't uncharted territory for the 27-year-old, who previously held DREAM's middleweight title after winning the organization's grand prix in 2008. However, he later signed with Strikeforce, where he held the organization's title in the light-heavyweight division. All of Mousasi's recent work has come in the weight class.

Mousasi, who was scheduled to fight top contender Alexander Gustafsson, ultimately fought Latifi in UFC on FUEL TV 9's main event when the Swede has sidelined by a facial cut. After his decision win at the April 6 event, Mousasi suggested he would be taking an extended break to undergo knee surgery and get a rest after a tough training camp.

If he stays at light heavyweight, Mousasi is likely to get one of the division's top contenders.

But that's unlikely to change even if he moves down to middleweight, a division that's seen a resurgence with an influx of contenders in recent years.

I've always thought 185 made sense for him and figured he could get there fairly easily. Figured why he went to 205 was just a lazy nature, or perhaps despising cutting weight.

Other than Weidman, not many top wrestlers at 185. If I had the choice I would fight at 185 rather than 205.

I think he beats Bisping, Belcher, Stann, Rockhold, Munoz, Lombard.

Him and Vitor would be a fun fight. Okami I think he can beat, but he could get smothered too.

I'm all for a switch to 185 if it doesn't hurt his cardio, which he seems to have a limited supply of. Him and Silva would be a very fun fight.

I think he would do pretty well. Only guys I can see beating him are Anderson, Weidman, and Okami. I still think he could give anyone in that division a tough fight.

Mousasi vs. Sonnen at Middleweight would be an interesting match up.

I wouldn't say interesting as it would be Mousasi getting casually out wrestled and then his fanboys screaming that his loss was a robbery because he threw strikes off of his back. Probably with at least one warning or point deduction on Gegard's part for an upkick to an opponent in his guard.

That is not dead which can eternal lie and withs strange aeons even death may die.

I'd love it. Been pushing/hoping for it for some time now.

Lots of good match-ups for Mousasi and he won't have to worry as much about size discrepancies.

I think it would be interesting because we would really get to see if his guard has improved/changed or not. He looked like a joke vs. King Mo. Had the opportunity to go for several triangles or armbars but instead chose to forego them for some reason. One of the most frustrating fights I've ever watched.

I don't know... he has a good resume at LHW, won his UFC debut in the division, will probably get a high ranked opponent next. He may find himself starting from scratch if he changes weight.

He should decide what weight he wants to fight at and stick with it whether it be 205 or 185. If he keeps wasting years of his prime jumping divisions and fighting cans than he'll have nothing to show for the best years of his career when it ends.

He's overrated as well.
