I am taking Vinny. This is such a bad fight for Phil. Taking a fight against a fighter that should be ranked much lower but has a very good chance at beating him. Phil says he can out grapple Vinny but I don't think so. We are talking about one of the best BJJ practitioners on the planet. I also think Vinny has better striking. Neither has good striking by any means but I think Phil has the worst striking at 205.
I realize Phil is the 3 to 1 favorite. I realize wrestling many times wins out on BJJ. But I'll take Vinny because I really think Phil isn't a good striker at all. If Vinny is aggressive I am picking him to win.
Tough fight to call, I would say that Phil wins on the basis of being able to take Vinny down and Vinny unable to actually sub Phil. Decision win for Davis.
Phil Davis via being the better well rounded fighter. Just watched the countdown and I know he trains with Chael but why does Magalhaes talk any crap besides Igor he is 1-2 in the UFC and beat no one of note. It just surprised me I guess.
Phil Davis is a good wrestler but to be honest Vinny has been training a lot with a better wrestler in Chael Sonnen. Davis better show up with vastly improved striking here because I would not be shocked to see Magalhaes get this fight to the ground.
Very interesting match up. Davis can't use his wrestling because of Vinny's BJJ, but Phil's striking is pretty bad. All he has going for him is body and leg kicks, which could ultimately lead to a takedown for Vinny.
I think they'll end up in an awkward scramble, similar to Samman vs Casey, and Vinny will snatch an arm.
EDIT: Nevermind. I've been watching a few of Vinny's fights and his ground game in MMA honestly isn't that good. Yea, he usually gets the submission but it takes him forever. He'll get mount but not do anything with it sometimes.
I don't know how Phil will win, since his striking is poor and he can't use his wrestling, but I think he'll pull it off somehow. Hopefully I'm wrong.
Davis is good on the ground, but he's too slow and deliberate for Vinny, outclassed in every way.
Problem is, he doesn't have the striking to scare Vinny, they WILL tie up eventually and hit the ground, possibly with Davis initiating the takedown. He'll go back to what he knows best and pay for it.
Vinny hasn't faced anybody of note yet. His grappling credentials are crazy, but we don't know that much about his MMA grappling. His biggest win is Igor... Vinny also doesn't respond well to being hit. He got finished by a half deflected punch from Bader. Even the few punches Igor landed, Vinny reacted poorly too. Igor just made the mistake of taking him down and paid for it.
Davis has solid BJJ, and excellent wrestling. We haven't seen Vinny's MMA grappling against a guy like Davis. He could very well submit him, but I don't think it's safe to say that if Davis takes him down, it will result in an automatic submission win for Vinny. I think people are banking too much on Vinny's grappling credentials and are forgetting this is MMA where it is a lot different. Who has Vinny beat? He's fought mostly unknown fighters and is still new to the real MMA scene in my opinion. I wouldn't be surprised if Davis got him down and grinded him a little without taking any risks. Davis seems very confident in his ground game against Vinny for some reason. That makes me a little curious.
Standing, it could go either way. You can say Phil has the worst stand up at 205, but Vinny's isn't much better at all and he doesn't have a great chin and like I said, doesn't respond well to being hit.
I think Davis has this. He seems extremely confident and I think it will pay off.
It's weird too considering he hasn't beat anyone of note in MMA. Igor is his biggest win, and Igor gave him all kinds of trouble up until he had a mental hiccup and forgot that he had barely any sort of ground game, yet he was taking down pretty much a pure BJJ ace.
Got to at least like he has been training with Sonnen, so he will get good looks at wrestlers tenancies. Plus Chael has to be able to help him make the best gameplan to attack a wrestler with his skillset.
Let's see if I get this one right. Picking Davis to win. I think Vinny hasn't fought the competition Davis has and it will show tonight. We will see though.
Wow, Vinny ****ed that up bad. Would have had the back if he just calmed down a bit.
