UFC fines Anderson Silva $50,000 for media-event no-show (plus Weidman response)

Quote:
LAS VEGAS The Ultimate Fighting Championship has fined middleweight titleholder Anderson Silva $50,000 for refusing to take part in a planned pre-UFC 162 media event.

Silva (33-4 MMA, 16-0 UFC) was scheduled to talk with a few of Los Angeles' largest media outlets on Tuesday but ultimately skipped the session and instead flew home to his native Brazil.

"We had a full media day set up for him in Los Angeles, and he just decided he didn't want to do it, so he's being fined $50,000," UFC President Dana White told USA TODAY Sports and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

Weidman, who lives in New York and was en route to Las Vegas for his own media event, noted he just got back from another media tour in Los Angeles, not to mention stops in Montreal and Toronto to promote the fight.

"I hope he has a good reason why he didn't go. I just went out to Los Angeles for three days. I just wasted time during my camp."

"I haven't been in this sport as long as him," Weidman said, "but you watch these superstar basketball players like LeBron James, and after every game, win or lose, he answers questions from the media.

"There's always stuff that you don't want to do when you're an athlete, but you just have to do it."

Weidman, who is new to the limelight, questioned whether Silva's priorities were in tact before their middleweight title fight later this summer.

"I hope he's staying grounded," he said. "I hope his head isn't getting so big that he thinks he doesn't have to do things for the UFC, but who am I to judge?

"If his head is really getting too big, I'm definitely going to bring him down to earth on July 6."

It's kinda premature to judge Anderson over this incident until we get all the fact. I didn't know who Weidman was before, don't care who is now, but would love to see him get his ass beat and go back to the under cards.

Hopefully he comes out with an explanation as to why he would miss this event. This seem out of his character so I assume he may have a decent reason. In any case, it's understandable that after dominating in the UFC for so long, constant media obligations can become very tiring and socially draining. GSP seems to be experiancing the same discomfort.

You should have just titled it "Weidmans response to Anderson being a no show". That way it comes off as being a different article instead of just being the same as the one we already got.
