Open weight title

How do you guys feel about having an open weight title? By open weight I mean no weight classes, no divisions or anything, just whoever wants to fight each other can fight each other free of any weight restrictions. This would be open to any of the fighters and would be a division of its own that they can jump to whenever they want. The title would be given to the first who fight and from then on anyone can challenge for the title within reason, for starters only those on winning streaks could challenge for it. The title could potentially move through several weight classes on its own if there was a rule that allowed only people one weight class above or below to challenge for the title. The champion should also be stripped of the title if he is unable to defend it due to injury and it should go to the next two willing to fight for it who are at most two divisions apart.

What do you guys think? Should the UFC introduce an open weight title that can float from division to division?

Fun idea on paper - but Dana White wants to avoid "freak shows" and there's the issue of safety with potential size discrepancies.

But it would be nice for Chael to have somewhere to call home

That would be like going back in time. Interesting, but if it is already hard to book fights within one division, not mentioning superfights, how to find room in the fighters agenda chasing their belts for it?

No commission in the U.S. or Canada would sanction that fight

This... You'd have to go back to Japan to pull something like this off.

There are a few fights in the middle that could be interesting but really anyone below WW might as well not even try.

If this some how did happen I think they would need to be semi-open weight with 2 divisions. A heavy and light division that is split at WW or MW. There could be some decent fights if they let fighters fight whoever in non title fights. But if it was just fighters challenging for the championship then I don't see how it could work. Its like if Cain won the open weight title and 145lb fighter challenges what would the odds on that fight be? A topped ranked 145lber vs a low level no name heavy ok but against the HW champ, no way.

The size discrepancy was addressed, you only allow fighters at most 2 weight classes away from each other to fight for the title at first, and only fighters 1 weight class above or below the current champion can challenge for the title. This way a guy like Bigfoot can't fight a guy like Frankie Edgar because they are a full 5 weight classes apart, but Donald Cerrone or Faber can fight Frankie for the title without being in his respected weight class. If Cerrone wins the belt can potentially go to a MW now. They could do 2 weight classes above or below, but that might be too much.

Assuming a HW wins the title, that means only a LW can challenge him. It completely destroys the point of having open weight class title fights.

Honestly, for this theory to work, there are no titles, just a tournament.

Have weight mins-max... but give them a decent spread. Like 125-169 and 170-265.

If you have a title, someone huge is going to win it and completely remove the little guys chances at competing for it.
