Barboza Turns Down Khabilov @ UFC166

A planned fight between Rustam Khabilov and Edson Barboza has been scrapped after the Brazilian lightweight turned down the fight.

It could have been glorious. Few things are as frustrating as finding out how great something could have been. Before it even got a chance to make headlines a fight between Rustam Khabilov and Edson Barboza has been scrapped. While no specific details were given, Khabilov's camp is placing the blame firmly on Barboza. MMABoxing.ru has the story:

Rustam Khabilov agreed to a fight against Edson Barboza at UFC 166, but the Brazilian's camp has refused to fight with the Russian and asks UFC give him another opponent.
Barboza is fresh of a two round destruction of Rafael Oliveira at UFC 162. Khabilov is coming off a second suplex induced TKO over Yancy Medeiros at UFC 159. The two lightweights had been tentatively set to square off at UFC 166: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos III. No word yet as to whether either fighter will still be appearing on the card. Stay tuned as I'm sure a new fight announcement for one of them will be forthcoming.

I've been a big Barboza fan for years but this is rather disappointing IMO. I thought this fight had fireworks written all over it. I can understand that he might want to fight someone with a bigger name after two impressive TKO victories, he's probably dying to prove himself after that loss to Varner.

No wonder. Khabilov is a horrific match up for him.

Yeah I can see why Barboza turned this one down. This will be his eighth UFC fight and it's only a lateral move. Not only that it doesn't even put him on the main card, or likely the main event on the prelims what with the card having Gonzaga/Jordan, Lombard/Marquardt, and Rockhold/Boetsch.

This is kinda like the Gustaf/Davis prelim fight...just bad match making.

Turning down fights in the UFC is never a good thing. Thats a black mark against his record.

Not if he is trying to get a bigger fight I wouldn't have thought.

I bet fighters turn down fights all the time.

Barboza isnt anything special so I don't see why he's turning down fights.

Well at some point a fighter has to be fed up with them. Fact of the matter is he hasn't been on the main card since his KOTY against Terry Etim. Think about that for a second, he has the biggest KO of the year...and they send him back to the prelims. He's been impressive on the prelims but he's not getting the bonuses...because he's on the prelims. Now he has a 6-1 record and is lined up to fight another dark horse Khabilov. This is a fight I could see main eventing a Russian Fuel TV card, and it's buried in the prelims.

So by taking this fight, you aren't getting the monetary bonuses from sponsors or the UFC and you may very well lose and a win doesn't put you in title contention because Khabilov isn't a name.
