***OFFICIAL*** MMAForum Versus Week 3- Best Shogun Revenege

So with UFC on Fox Sports 1 coming up this weekend, I figured why not feature Main-eventer Shogun Rua in this weeks Versus.

Shogun has avenged three losses in his career, Mark Coleman, Forrest Griffin and Lyoto Machida.

What was the best revenge moment in Shogun Rua's Career?

Lyoto Machida
-Days Waited for Revenge- 196 Days
-First Fight- Loss- Decision(Unanimous) - UFC 104
-Revenge Fight- Win- KO(Punches) - 3:35 Round 1 - UFC 113

Mark Coleman
-Days Waited for Revenge- 1056 Days
-First Fight- Loss- Tko(Broken Arm) - 0:49 Round 1 - Pride 31
-Revenge Fight- Win- Tko(Punches) - 4:36 Round 3 - UFC 93

Forrest Griffin
-Days Waited for Revenege- 1435
-First Fight- Loss- Submission(Rear Naked Choke) - 4:45 Round 3- UFC 76

I went Machida KO. The scores from their first fight were so brutal, nothing finer then swift violent atonement at the highest possible level.

Not to say the Griffin win was not sweet as well all things considered. The Coleman win was good too, I think Shogun would of caught his chin or leg in their first fight though.

Shogun's injuries definitely are fitting of that "what if" thread but so goes the game.

I said after Jones beat shogun for the title, it was a weird contrast of a man that could have been a long time champion with dominate and destructive wins facing what he was eight years ago.

For me I prefer the Machida fight, I was furious at the end of the first fight and I felt like I waited an eternity of the second fight. Though for some reason I feel like Shogun would find the Forrest win more gratifying.

Machida. The Coleman loss was a fluke and he flat out got beaten against Griffin. Most people feel he was robbed against Machida, so he didn't leave it up to chance the second time.

I went with Griffin. A lot of people felt he was robbed against Machida, but on the other hand a lot of people thought he lost as well. Griffin was supposed to be fodder for a guy like Shogun coming over from Japan and he was finished.

So although the Machida fight was huge, it was split between who thought who won and that was supposed to be a good one whereas I think most people thought Shogun was going to tear through Griffin like he did in the second fight.

I choose Griffin too, that was Shogun's arrival party and it went to shit... Shogun minced him in the rematch.

The Machida saga is obviously massive, but I knew Shogun won the first fight and was quite confident he'd win the second... he smashed Lyoto too.

The Griffin fight was always the haters' go-to, and funnily enough, that rematch is rarely mentioned. Nasty knockout.

It probably isn't mentioned because Forrest fell apart after he lost the title and looked awful. I also thought it was weird timing for the fight.

Part of why I think the Machida fight is the biggest redemption is that for the most part, many people despite the outcome of the fights, did not believe Griffin and Coleman were better then Shogun. Machida though, was elite enough to be at that level. Stamping that victory, promotional trinket aside, was very significant because in the later part of that decade, Machida established himself as being much better overall then those other two.

Excellent thread!

I voted Machida as the first fight was the biggest robbery I'd witnessed (I almost swore off supporting UFC after that).

Everyone automatically assumes Shogun is done and Machida is 'better' at this stage, but Rua has his number.

The Coleman loss was a huge fluke, it was an injury that could have happened to anyone. I think there was more beef with the Chute Box vs. Lion's Den than with Coleman/Shogun.

Forrest clearly put the kibosh on Shoguns UFC debute, but got manhandled in the rematch. Forrest was on a down swing, but that is what should have happened in the first fight.

Hopefully Shogun blitzes Sonnen this weekend, couldn't stomach Rua losing 2 in a row.

Machida, especially after being robbed in the first fight.

Griffin was clearly distracted in the rematch.
