I don't understand why there are some people here who "want" Shields to win. I don't dislike him, but I couldn't see myself being a big fan of his. When he wins these days, he wins ugly and doesn't look very impressive at all, and it's not like his fights are extremely entertaining either. Him winning would also mean that we have eliminated a top welterweight contender and he moves up which doesn't mean much considering he has already been beat by St. Pierre and doesn't pose much of a threat to him either way. Maia may get jabbed all night and be unable to take St. Pierre down, but at least he is a new challenge and we know there is an area where St. Pierre probably wouldn't want to be. So yeah, that's why I don't see why someone would "want" Shields to win. It just holds the division back and makes the title picture kind of boring at 170. Well, unless Hendricks wins the belt.
Anyways, I don't think it will matter because I think Maia will win this. He clearly has an advantage on the ground, and I don't see Shields blanketing a guy like Maia if he decides to turn this into a grappling match. The only way I see Shields winning is if he's able to press Maia against the fence and make this an ugly fight. Do his fans want to see that though? Any Shields fans here that want to see that? A sloppy kick boxing match would be upsetting too. Shields doesn't have good stand up, but he consistently throws and that scores points. What a disappointment this would be if it turned into a K1 match. It could go either way in my opinion if that were to happen, so I guess there are "two" ways Shields can win. If he's able to keep Maia against the fence and stall, or if Maia turns back into his K1 self and potentially fails. (Question mark on whether he'd fail or not, though.)
Good news is Shields isn't that great at 170 so I could see Maia doing the same thing to him that he did to Fitch.
Picking Maia to win a slightly less dominating decision, but a decision none the less.
