Dana White: Chael Sonnen vs. Phil Davis 'could happen' at UFC 167

Quote:
INDIANAPOLIS – Despite the best efforts of Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva to pick a fight with each other, it doesn't look as if that's a bout that will go down before year's end.

So if Sonnen (29-13-1 MMA, 7-6 UFC) wants to fight again, and especially if he wants to be a part of November's UFC 167, which will celebrate the promotion's 20th anniversary, someone else will have to do.

According to UFC President Dana White, that someone could be Phil Davis rather than Silva (35-12-1 MMA, 5-7 UFC).

Sonnen called out Silva after his win earlier this month over Mauricio Rua, which headlined UFC on Fight Night 26 in Boston. Silva responded to that challenge with a YouTube video in Portuguese that told Sonnen what he thinks of him.

But White reiterated on Wednesday following the post-event news conference for UFC Fight Night 27 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis that Silva was injured.

"He's not going to be healthy till January," White said. "He can't even start training till January."

So that rules him out of the running for UFC 167, which takes place Nov. 16 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

White said Sonnen, who recently has challenged for titles in both the middleweight and light heavyweight very likely could wind up getting his wish to fight on the card – and hinted that a recent Davis callout of Sonnen could lead to a pairing of the two in a light heavyweight bout.

"We talked a little bit tonight," White said of Sonnen. "He wants to fight on that 20th anniversary card. He wants to co-main that (card). I'm working on it. That fight (against Phil Davis) could happen."

Prior to Sonnen's win over Rua, he dropped a light heavyweight title fight to champ Jon Jones. Before that, he was stopped in the second by Anderson Silva in a middleweight title rematch.

Davis, meanwhile, is coming off a split-decision win over former champion that gave him a three-fight winning streak.

No Machida, No Silva, No Belfort...Phil Davis

hmmmm I guess.

According to the UFC rankings

1. Gus
2. Lyoto (???)
3. Glover
4. Davis

I'm not sure how Glover is ranked 3 when he's never fought a guy ranked in the top 10. His next fight against Bader is no different. I'm not saying Bader is a can, but he's not top 10 right now.

However, it seems the UFC has interest in helping push Glover along. With that said, I think with a win over Bader, the next fight in line should be Glover vs Davis for the winner of Jones vs Gus.

This would at least make a fresh top 4 in the LHW division. I don't see the point in pushing Chael until top 5 competition in the LHW division when he just lost a very convincing fight to the champ. Let's let these new guys get a shot at it first.

With Machida, Mousasi and Henderson leaving the LHW division the top ten is pretty much a joke.

1. Gustaf
2. Davis
3. Evans
4. Glover
5. Nog
6. Sonnen
7. Bader
8. T. Silva
9. Shogun
10. W. Silva...I mean who else

Te'Huna? Manuwa? Perosh? Jimmo? Cavalcante? Ovince St. Preux?

You really see how Cormier can get an immediate title shot

That's why Glover vs Davis (assuming Glover beats bader) makes the most sense to me. These divisional jumpers like Chael really shouldn't be getting caught up in the title runs IMO.

It's a weak division, so that's why they're doing it. However, keep the opportunities coming for the guys that belong there.

Calling bullshit on Dana as usual.

Wand already accepted the fight by responding that he wants 6 rounds against Sonnen and the UFC to pay up. Dana is going back to the Wand being injured excuse because they don't want to pay him and they're trying to use a proposed Sonnen vs Davis fight as another bluff because Wand called them out last week.

Chael Sonnen has called out Wanderlei Silva and Silva has accepted the challenge, but his demands may be too high for the UFC to make the fight happen according to UFC president Dana White.

Quote:
On Wednesday, a fight between Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva appeared to hinge solely on the former Pride FC champion’s health. Less than 24 hours later, however, the bout has reportedly gone off the rails.

Sonnen continued his pleas for the fight with Silva on Wednesday’s Fox Sports Live. UFC president Dana White, an in-studio guest on the show, said he was ready to make the fight and designate it the UFC 167: St-Pierre vs. Hendricks co-main event, as long as Silva was healthy.

Silva’s health doesn’t appear to be a factor, but what he wants for compensation seems to have killed any hopes for the bout.

Sigh. As I said, too good to be true. Wanderlei isn't in the position to be playing hardball to be quite honest. Chael vs Davis would be OK, but not ideal. I'd be curious to see who would win though, I think that could honestly go either way. I'd also love to see the gambling odds on the fight going the distance.

Davis by decision, via sprawl and 'technical' striking.

I thought Chael said he was headed back to middleweight?
