Matt Brown vs. Tarec Saffiedine targeted for December UFC event

Quote:
Matt Brown (18-11 MMA, 11-5 UFC) appears he'll
get his wish to fight a notable welterweight.

The surging 170-pound contender has been targeted for a December matchup with former Strikeforce champion Tarec Saffiedine (14-3 MMA, 0-0 UFC),
UFC President Dana White confirmed with FOXSports.com.

White said the booking is dependent on Saffiedine's health, so an exact date hasn't been nailed down. However, the UFC has events planned for Dec. 14 (UFC on FOX 9), Dec. 21 (a UFC Fight Night event in Australia) and Dec. 28 (the year-end UFC 168).

Brown currently is ranked No. 10 and Saffiedine is No. 15 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie.com MMA welterweight rankings.

Brown had campaigned for a top 10 opponent after his latest win. In the UFC's official rankings, Brown and Saffiedine are ranked No. 10 and No. 8, respectively.

Once a mere .500 fighter, Brown has resurrected his career while fighting in the world's most prominent MMA organization. "The Ultimate Fighter 7" cast member recently dismantled Mike Pyle
in 29 seconds at UFC Fight Night 26 and picked up a "Knockout the Night" award. It marked the Ohio-based fighter's sixth consecutive victory, five of which came via knockout.

Saffiedine, meanwhile, makes his promotion debut after a 6-1 run in Strikeforce, where he defeated Nate Marquardt to win the welterweight title before the organization closed shop. He's currently riding a four-fight winning streak. However, a planned UFC on FOX 8 bout with Robbie Lawler earlier this year was scrapped when the Belgian fighter suffered an undisclosed injury.

I second this and if he beats Tarec, he needs to be the next major contender. I'm hopping if he wins he gets condit. I don't want to see Condit challenge for the belt yet, even though I like him and his style of fighting.

Meh, almost forget about Saff. He won the SF title and hasn't even fought in the UFC, where these other guys have fought multiple times.

Was hoping for Condit/Brown.

I can see Brown taking this. I don't think he will sit back and get leg kicked to death like Marquardt did.

I don't think Brown is ready for Condit yet. I know Brown would go in there and fight his ass off... I just think he needs a top ten guy before he needs the 3rd best WW in the world.

one more win for the Immortal one!

if he takes him out in the same fashion pyle went down i could see them going right to condit, but i'd like to see matt and nate diaz first.

Rankings are just words on paper or an internet screen. It isn't like if he fights Saff he magically receives top 10 experience to be able to better handle Condit.

Brown is hot NOW. He is wrecking decent stand up fighters with his fists. He has 6 wins in a row. Not sure what more he can do to move up the ladder quicker.

Condit is a tougher fight. But it is the better fight that more people want. Brown is 32 and been in teh game for a while. He is the hottest WW going now. I think it is perfect timing to match him up with Condit.

Who does Condit now get?

Rory Mac... Winner gets the title shot.

Matt has looked great as of late, but we have seen this a hundred times where they step up into that top bubble and fall apart. Dan Hardy ring a bell?

Maybe Brown will do great, but I typically favor a guy at least fighting someone top 10, then top 5 and then title shot.

I do think it helps the fighters. It's not so much that they have new magical super powers but they are gaining big fight experience at a more moderate pace, apposed to being flung to the top.
