Bad move IMO. His entire game against Jones was based on being able to counter wrestle him, based in no small part on training with a super elite wrestler like Davis I'm sure. Just compare his TDD to his earlier fights.

I'm sure he knows its a bad move for his training. But if he cant afford to train stateside, what choice does he have?

The UFC should be jumping on this and speaking to him. See if they can help. If the main problem is money, the UFC should sort him out. It's not right when a fighter this important to his division has to downgrade their training because of money.

Either way. Good luck to him. He deserves it.

I doubt it's that he can't afford it. It's more likely he just doesn't want to pay it and doesn't want to keep traveling and being away from his family.

I assure you him beating jon jones and becoming lhw champion will make him more money than losing grappling and footwork skills and staying in sweden with your peak now reached and grappling diminishing every day. It's almost as stupid as phillipou going to a kickboxing camp after being at serra-longos.

Maybe he thinks since he can hang with the best wrestlers i.e. Jones in the octagon he can manage with his own camp.

Thought IMO this is also a great risk. MMA is evolving and so in 5 years from now who knows how current skill sets will stand up. The safest route is being close to where the evolution is being pushed.

Maybe Gus could make more money from a business point though. His name will be huge in Sweden and he can start and run gyms here plus attract a lot of international talents.

The guy should just marry his fiancee and move back to the states with her pronto.

I would understand if he had to leave his wife and kids behind, that can be a real motivational downer even if you have better career / training prospects staying away, but he's not married and has no kids. If it's the 'rents and siblings he's missing dude can just concentrate on winning the belt for now, then he'll have more than enough dough to make the trips back and forth whenever he wants.

Sure. If he won the belt. But right now hes earning $30k to show for a championship bout plus sponsors etc. Ive got no idea how many fights are left on his contract. It could be 5 or more for all we know. If hes paying for top draw training in the US, having to fly back and forth to Sweden 4+ times a year as well as supporting his family, hes not going to be very flush.

I agree with Liddelinenko. He should move to the states with his family. Although if he doesnt, I understand. Them Nords are tied to their motherland in ways most of us mongrels can never understand.

It is the hen and the egg situation. He does not want to give up what he has until he is financially set. He will easier be financially set if he moves to the states.

Oh I know the UFC pay sucks overall, but the guy is already #1 contender and even at the vastly underpaid 30/30 per fight he certainly isn't not financially set.

If he fights 3 times a year and wins even one of them (a conservative estimate, given his skill level), that's still 120K for the year just in base pay, more than what 90% of the world makes. He just got a FOTN bonus so that's another 75K this year, and I'm sure at his level of fame his endorsements are good enough to offset his expenses at least.

IMO a 6 figure income is definitely stable enough to get married and/or relocate, unless there are other factors at work.

Well since he isn't married he should move over with her. I mean I don't think sweden is renowned for elite grapplers or sparring partners, maybe some ok striking partners at best. You gotta get out of your comfort zone and train with the best if you wanna be the best thats why frank mirs revival and change of camps is way too late the damage has been done.
