Jones vs Tex not happening at UFC 169 over Super Bowl

Hopefully, you didn't already buy those plane tickets.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was expected to bring a light heavyweight title fight to UFC 169, the mixed martial arts (MMA) pay-per-view (PPV) event scheduled for Feb. 1, 2013 in (or around) Newark, New Jersey, which would coincide with Super Bowl 48 on Feb. 2 at the nearby MetLife stadium.

Headlining the event, according to an initial report from UFC, was Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira.

Not happening.

That's because the timing "wouldn't work," according to UFC President Dana White, who told reporters on today's (Oct. 7) media conference call that his team "jumped the gun," as the bout was never official. It is, however, being planned for the following month at a venue to be determined.

Easy come, easy go.

Alexander Gustafsson is "100 percent" next in line for a 205-pound title shot if he's able to win his next fight, according to White. At this time, "The Mauler" does not have an opponent lined up, but recent talk puts him at a yet-to-be-announced fight card in Sweden, or possibly London.

That's important to note, because White was trying to coordinate bouts between Jones and Gustafsson. Following their epic championship headliner at last month's UFC 165 event (more on that here), fight fans were calling for an immediate rematch to settle this (mild) controversy.

If they compete at the same time, or close to it, then they can also be on the same schedule when it comes to getting back into camp and ultimately, back into the Octagon. Assuming, of course, we don't get a replay of this second-round mishap.

Teixeira, meanwhile, can do nothing but wait.

The soft-spoken Brazilian has been on a "will-he-or-won't-he" roller coaster when it comes to vying for the title. A sloppy knockout win over Ryan Bader a few weeks back in Brazil, coupled with Gustafsson's career performance in Toronto, left the door open for a Swedish switcheroo.

It hasn't happened yet, but now he's got another month or so to sweat over it.

Or until whenever the timing "works."

"Although no one can go back and make a new beginning, anyone can change now and make a new end."

Damn too bad. I was going to maybe look into getting tickets, but I probably won't bother now. Oh well, I'd rather Bones wait an additional month to recover if it'll help.

Lol what kind of logic is that? That doesn't make any sense. If Chandler was in the Super Bowl (odds are against it), there would be WAY more press on the Bones fight, as like a "look how talented this family is that the two brothers are in huge events this weekend in two different sports".

A more likely scenario is maybe Bones realized he should have taken more time off to heal his toe between the Sonnen & Gus fights, and he barely escaped with his title, so he wants to make sure he is taking the proper time to recover. And some bozo on the UFC PR team fumbled it and had this released before it was really official.
